The two had been jamming together for over a year at a weekly Friday night improv session hosted by their mutual friend Ryan Overly. Upon recognizing an uncanny similarity between their musical tastes and goals, the pair began an intensive 9 month span of writing and composing that resulted in a string of shows in late 2007 and early 2008. The musicians attempted to create a sound that Ben once phrased as "roots reggae infused with gangsta rap." Also influenced by afro-beat, various forms of hip-hop, R&B, soul, funk, and ethnic musical styles from around the world, their distinctive sound began to grow. The early band was comprised of Riggs on percussion, programming, & lead vocals, Weiss on rhythm guitar, lead vocals & melodica, Overly on lead guitar & percussion, bassist Evan Gentry, and keyboardist Tim Shenk. The band began recording their debut album in early summer of 2009 at the studio of Pete Barnhart, a long-time acquaintance of Riggs' who reached ou to the players after he heard a rough demo track on Myspace. Tim Shenk recorded the keyboard parts on the album, but then departed the band. Brandon Tennis was also added on percussion during this period. The Lions spent two years recording the album and honing their live show, and replaced Shenk on keys with Doug Smith. Two years later, in the summer of 2011, their debut album is complete and is set to be released in September of 2011.
