For fans of Alicia Keys & Sade please check out the infectious sounds of newcomer Jazmín Sky! This Oakland, California-based singer/songwriter/musician recently released her self-titled debut album through Clermont music, a jazz-infused concoction of neo-soul and funk grooves, flavored with gospel-inflected vocal stylings, complex harmonies, Latin rhythms, and hooks catchy enough to satisfy any Beyoncé fan. Universal themes of romantic loss, betrayal and longing recur throughout Sky’s lyrics, but the album contains several quirkier tracks in addition, most notably a controversial political rant about freedom of speech (American Lie), as well as a playfully nostalgic ode to New York City (Downtown). Sky also pays homage to her idol Chaka Khan with a blistering gospel-tinged rendition of the ‘70’s Rufus hit, You Got the Love.
Though Sky’s impressive pipes constitute the core of her appeal, she sets herself apart from the soul diva pack by writing her own material, singing and rapping in French and Spanish, and playing flute and violin on several tracks. She also acted as executive and co-producer for the CD.
