Shane Hendren has been called an American Master, quite a statement for a man yet to breach the 40-year-old mark. Yet when you consider that, he grew up ranching and spent a decade riding bulls to pay the bills all the while honing his metal smithing skills one can appreciate that he has more than paid his dues. His years of hard work were recognized with first place awards at such prestigious shows as Santa Fe Indian Market and the most coveted recognition in the Indian art world the Indian Arts and Crafts Association Artist of the year in 2007.
Superior craftsmanship and universally appealing designs rooted in his Native American heritage have resulted in Shane’s work being collected privately and publicly around the world. Described as Native Minimalism Shane’s work incorporates traditional symbolism and iconography in its most basic forms much in the same way traditional Navajo textiles did to tell a story and preserve culture. Like those coveted blankets that sell for tens of thousands of dollars, Hendren’s work continues to appreciate because it is unique and genuine in design and artistry.
A mastery of such advanced jewelry techniques as tufa casting, fabrication, hollow forming, marriage of metals, raising and mokume gane an ancient Japanese process of laminating non-ferrous metals to create patterns in the metal that mirror wood grain affords him greater creative opportunity’s. Shane also cuts most of his own stones, using not only high-grade turquoise such as Blue Gem and Nevada Blue but also current mineral discoveries such as Sinoran Sun Rise. As if that was not enough, he also incorporates patinas to accentuate the underlying characteristics of the metals he uses increasing the unique individuality of each piece.
From concept and design to the actual fabrication and finish Shane Hendren’s work is his own, providing his collectors with the assurance that they are getting a genuine work of art that will be cherished for generations to come.
