    Wild Rockies Field Institute's Interests
GeneralKayaking, backpacking, cycling, and anything outdoors. We love to educate students and introduce them to real issues in the world, to teach them to think critically about them, and to help them reach their goals. We like to do all of this in some of the world's most beautiful places, and we enjoy providing college credit for it.
MusicWell, here in the WRFI office, we listen to everything from bigwigs Norah Jones and Mark Knopfler to local Missoula, MT musicians like Tom Catmull and Amy Martin. When you're on course and riding in the van, you listen to whatever you bring along.
MoviesGood question. We'll have to poll some instructors and get back to you!
TelevisionUm, we don't have one here in the office, and there's nowhere to plug in when you're out under the stars.
BooksNo way can we count them all! The highlights read on our courses: "Rediscovery of North America" by Barry Lopez. "Desert Solitaire" by Edward Abbey. "A Sand County Almanac" by Aldo Leopold. "All my Relations" by Winona LaDuke
HeroesMatt Thomas, one of WRFI's founders. We offer a Matt Thomas scholarship, amongst other scholarships. Read about it and everything else at www.wrfi.net.

Who I'd like to meet:
Prospective students! Explore your dreams. This may be the most important part of a liberal arts education, and the Wild Rockies Field Institute can help make it happen. Perhaps you’d like to follow in the footsteps of Lewis & Clark, or kayak with whales in Baja’s Sea of Cortez. We can help you watch, from a safe distance, a grizzly bear fish a river for salmon on the coast of Alaska, or learn, firsthand, from the ancient wisdom of a Native elder. In the evenings you will read about the historical, social, environmental, economic and political context in which these events take place. The next day, perhaps, you will discuss what these experiences mean to you and the nine other classmates that have joined you on a fun, adventure-packed journey that’s sure to influence who you are and how you work in the world. All for college credit you can use toward your degree. Check us out at www.wrfi.net.

Wilderness Watch

The Bob Marshall Wilderness Complex covers more than 1.5 million acres.
This is a much-larger-than-Delaware chunk of wild land in Western Montana home to grizzlies, eagles, mountain goats, and much, much more.

Protected as the crown jewel of America's National Wilderness Preservation System, "the Bob" serves as the prototype for all of the nation's 702 wilderness areas. Yet this priceless area is degrading. A recent Wilderness Watch analysis of 20 years of Forest Service monitoring data documented a chronic decline in wilderness values in the area. We will use our analysis to educate managers, interest groups, and members of Congress on conditions within the Bob Marshall Wilderness.

Our goal with this is to prevent degradation of the wilderness character of the Bob Marshall Wilderness Complex. The management of wilderness in the Northern Rockies often sets the tone for the rest of the nation. In fact, “the Bob” is known as “the flagship wilderness” for that reason. As such, weakening wilderness standards here reverberate through the whole of the National Wilderness Preservation System.

We're currently offering free one-year student memberships.
