...On a cold, blustery February morning in 1964 on the mean streets of Newark New Jersey, William J. Smith (who incidentally was named after John F. Kennedy) was dragged kicking and screaming into a world he did nothing to create... after those first screams, Smith remained silent for 18 years. He spoke ná a word. he spent 13 years in sunny rochester ny and graduated cardinal mooney high, a lovely institution. In 1982 he was drafted by the NY Mets...six weeks later he was released by the NY Mets. It is then on that chilly spring morning in Florida his voice ascended to the Heavens like fervent prayer. He sold his mother's wedding ring which he stole several weeks prior, and took the next Greyhound to the "Big Apple"... Upon arrival, as he gazed across the sprawling Megalopolis, he knew he had arrived...he knew he had found his home. With $18, a pair of jeans, and a sack full of dreams he proceeded at a vigorous pace towards his future...and, of course, a girl with an apartment. After securing a position as a mixologist at a local downtown tavern and finding a girlfriend with an apartment, Smith began focusing on his music. He walked and played his songs in the same neighborhoods and venues as a certain folk singer did years before, you might know him as Bob Dylan. This began the odyssey that would take Smith from eating out of dumpsters in the Bowery to rubbing elbows (and sometimes fists) with some of the most powerful and influential people in the entertainment business.
BUT SERIOUSLY...Over his 18 year career Smith was a signed writer with Miles Copeland's "Bugle Publishing" (Keith Urban, Carol King, Bon Jovi, Lisa Loeb, Sting, Stewart Copeland) Smith and Miles also worked on his infamous band Yarnhead (www.myspace.com/yarnheadmusic) And, he still performs occasionally in his current band The William Smith Orchestra (www.myspace.com/thewilliamsmithorchestra) He built and opened two record labels that were distributed through Universal Music Group. He has also produced and worked with artists for Capitol, Sony, Universal, Republic, Curb, Wind-Up, Def Jam, RCA, Warner Bros., J Records (which incidentally sued him 4 times), Blacksmith Records, Womack Records.
