The songwriter's debut five-track EP for Hidden Shoal marries wafting synth textures and an acoustic guitar bedrock to well-honed direct songcraft, making every cut a keeper. Kramies' efforts (aided by longtime collaborators Dave Paolucci and producer Todd Tobias) are best realized on the title track, where his journey to stirring-anthem Valhalla finds his voice first recalling Tim Booth of James before ascending to full-on Bono territory. Elsewhere, the chilly expanse of "Coal Miners Executive Club" and its comforting refrain of "We can pace ourselves" swirl inside the head, and "Antiquarian Days" evokes John Lennon at his most reflective. Unlike some more well-known peddlers of similar aesthetic pedigree (Coldplay, I'm looking at you), Mr. Windt's grand sweeping gestures are never empty, and his hooks are never cheap. It's no wonder that with each subsequent listen, I find myself enjoying ​The European​ more and more. Kramies: The European This Dutch-American singer-songwriter knows how to make grand, sweeping gestures couched in strong hooks without coming off as cheap or hackneyed about it.

His music is one to be tackled with a mind that is willing to be taken on a trip; one that is as instrumentally engaging as it is deeply pensive in regards to its lyrical content. It is also no question that Todd Tobias and Kramies make a great recording team. Tobias does every justice to the ethereal and occasionally gloomy soundscape created by Kramies, producing a truly beautiful and diversified release. This kicks other solo artists like James Blunt and Edwin McCain to the curb. In fact, it doesn’t even belong in the same league of the likes of those two. He delivers at such a high caliber that exceeds the title of “solo artist,” and leaves it in the dust as nothing more than a misnomer. LEONARD'S LAIR Music Reviews.. According to his press release, Kramies deals in “Atmos-pop” and it’s an accurate description too. This Dutch-American artist has spent several months touring old pubs and concert halls in Ireland for inspiration, to further his quest for ambient perfection For his first release on the Hidden Shoal label, ‘Intro’ begins serenely enough with pure vocals, rustic guitars (from David Paolucci) and smooth electronica but the song becomes engulfed by drone. The title track sees the beauty from beginning to end, however. It’s epic in a quiet way as Kramies offers melancholic ache as a riposte to the swooping electronic backing. Similarly, after a slow start, ‘Inventors’ is full of interesting layers of sound. Standout track, though, is undoubtedly ‘Coal Miners Executive Club’. Here, the keyboard washes are as big and colourful as an M83 track but any worries about bloated melodrama are brought down to earth by Kramies’ grounded vocals. Then just to prove he can keep it simple, ‘Antiquarian’ changes tack to leave the artist with voice, guitar and the minimum of effects. ‘The European’ is rich in detail and of course atmosphere but Kramies is clever enough to balance the high-flying surrounding noise with some heartfelt delivery. He should visit Ireland more often based on this performance.
