Vertigo is a 1958 psychological thriller directed by Alfred Hitchcock. The film features James Stewart, Kim Novak and Barbara Bel Geddes. It was premiered in the San Sebastian International Film Festival on May 8, 1958, where it was received poorly, polarizing both critics and commercial audiences. However, since the Cahiers du cinéma's critics re-evaluation in the 1960s, it has steadily been recognized as one of the most influential American films ever made. In 1989, Vertigo was recognized as a "culturally, historically and aesthetically significant" film by the National Film Registry and subsequently restored internationally in 1996. The film ranked 4th and 2nd respectively in Sight and Sound's poll of the best films ever made, in 1992 and 2002 respectively.
