About me:
After fifteen years as a guitarist and professional musician in New York City I decided it was time to come back to live and work in the D.C. area. I left D.C. the first time to attend Berklee College of Music, in Boston and returned to live in the 80’s. At that time, I played with Root Boy Slim and Jr. Cline and the Recliners and many other groups. I also held the guitar chair at the National Theater for a while, playing “Sweet Charity” and “Cats”.
In 1989 I moved to New York because, well it’s New York- it’s happening. And it was. I played in music clubs almost every night, and did a good amount of studio work by day. I recorded with such artists as; Don Byron (Don Byron Plays the Music of Mickey Katz), Eric Anderson, Jim Allen, Ben E. King, Roscoe Gordon (Teeny Weeny Bit of Your Love) as well as his own bands; the Long Shadows, Dan Hovey Group, The Haunted Lobsters and Dan Hovey & Bad Daddy! In 1999 I appeared on a Broadway stage about 470 times in the show “Swing!” where I was featured playing guitar and lap steel. The run lasted 14 months, and when it was over I .. started subbing for guitarists in other shows including; Full Monte, Thoroughly Modern Millie, Aida and Mamma Mia!
But New York had changed alot under the reigns of mayor "Rudy" and even more post 9/11, and I noticed that a bunch of music clubs were gone; The Supper Club, The Bottom Line, Tramps, Manny’s Car Wash, McGoverns, Chicago Blues, The Speakeasy, Fannies Oyster Bar, Jack’s Joint, Mondo Cane, Mondo Perso, The Wetlands, Brother’s Bar-B-Q, Louisiana Bar and Grill, Windows on the World (top floor of the World Trade Center), The Angry Squire, Smalls and The Village Gate. I could go on all night. With a couple of exceptoins almost every place I had played or listened to music was gone. So I decided it was time to return to my roots in Washington, DC. And here I've been since "04"
Back in DC I'm gigging like crazy with my bands,: “Dan Hovey & Bad Daddy!” - a re-creation of the last band I led in NYC which is a swingin’ and rockin’ retro style trio. with Dave Elliot and Rico Petrocelli on drums and bass respectively, and GHz (gigahertz) with 2 other great musicians, Scott Giambusso on Bass and John Zidar on drums. GHz, a power trio performs hard-driving rock of the classic era, Cream, Hendrix, Zeppelin and the like. The band also performs a fair number of my originals. I also work weekly with a super talented singer from the area, Maryann Redmon. And in an effort to keep learning, I study with reknown Boston based jazz teacher, Charlie Banacos.
