  • Bio

Troubadour balladeer of folk, jazz, Celtic and traditional standards, Willow Rutherford has deep roots in the Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver indie music scenes. She is the former band leader and lead songwriter for the infamous Montreal supergroup, The Subcollisions. Her style of accordion-folk cabaret is unparalleled. Willow's songs have been referred to as "land-locked sea-shanties" with lyrics about hysterical love, historical fantasy, and a sublime mix of playful yet poignant narratives that are both earnest and ironic. Willow comes by music honestly. She is the offspring of the late, great pianist Mark Rutherford and the sister of Toronto songstress Calamity Royale. A chance encounter with a gifted accordion inspired an entirely new range of musicianship and Willow has never looked back. She has composed soundtracks for documentaries and animated shorts, and has accompanied rising stars The Fugitives, E.S.L., Annabelle Chvostek, and David Simard. Willow sings in English, French and Spanish and is a master of improvisation, both musically and lyrically. Willow was raised in the wilds of Southern Ontario. She once witnessed the tornado that hit Barrie in the '80's. Pink insulation, tooth floss, converted rice and hobby horses filled the sky. When her bed landed in a tree, she climbed down and discovered a strange instrument, later informed that it was an accordion. Upon first surprising squeeze, she was hooked and has never looked back. ......Manic panic...... .. .. .. .. .. ......Willow Rutherford.. | ..MySpace Music Videos.... .. ..Warm Worm...... .. .. .. .. .. .. ......Add to My Profile.. | ..More Videos.. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. ..........This layout was handmade with love by the folks at ..My space or yours?.. I have posted two of my songs that I performed with my old band the Subcollisions, therefore in the song Anchor there is me singing with a cold and playing my wheezing accordion + Subcollisions, (also note Éric Jarry graciously engineered this session), Warm worm with the Subcollisions was recorded live at the Tranzac by Dave Lang. Wonder When is just me with insomnia and a hangover accompanied by the cheapo software on my computer pomme. Old men knitting sweaters was recorded by my ol' man, Mark Rutherford.
