Other than being a mother to my cool kid, my main interest is Hoopdance. You can find out more about it by googling www.tribe.net/thehooppath. Music (making it and listening to it), design and architecture, yoga (I think this is the fountain of youth, along with the occasional glass of red wine or mug of stout, some dark chocolate and good food grown in your own damn garden), raising my daughter, spending time with my sweet husband, and my community of friends. I care about the environment and wish folks could just get along (which seems to require the precise balance between giving a damn and minding your own business).
Music
I can't do this section justice. I almost always have a James McMurtry CD in the exchanger. I also listen to Buddy and Julie Miller, Patti Griffin, Patti Smith (Horses is my favorite), The Velvet Underground, The Silos, Patty Larkin, Gillian Welch, Emmy Lou Harris, Victoria Williams, Greg Brown, Ali Farkah Toure, Nick Drake, Black Crows, Bruce Cockburn, Jesse Collin Young, John Prine, Gram Parsons, LOVE Neil Young, and music that's good to move and hoop to: Thievery Corporation, Zero 7, world music in general. There are some local musicians I love: Cyril Lance, Memphis, Hobex, Tres Chicas.

Practice at the Town Commons in Carrboro NC with the Hoop Pathers.
Television
Don't have one. Although, if my husband and I go to a restaurant with one, we have to agree to both of us facing the damn thing, or both with our backs to it. We get sucked into it. Frightening.
Books
Paul Theroux (Saint Jack, My Other Life, My Secret History, Riding the Iron Rooster) Peter Suskind (Perfume), Michael Ondaatje (I love his poem "The Cinnamon Peeler"), Mark Helprin (Winter's Tale), Sena Jeter Naslund (Ahab's Wife). I love reading books about design and architecture. My husband courted me by reading to me from the New Yorker magazine while I baked. I was running a catering business when my daughter was little and had asthma so I couldn't work on a consistent basis. I still love reading The New Yorker but love it when he reads to me. He's got a great voice and reads to our daughter in front of the fire most winter nights. I'm amazed by the wonderful books for children. It's nice to enjoy classics like The Chronicles of Narnia again as an adult.
Heroes
Hero is a strong word and I imagine a burden to the person so named, but I admire a lot of people: my parents, my daughter, my husband to name a few. Ghandhi comes to mind, as does Jesus, as two of the most peaceloving individuals ever born on earth. I admire any woman who manages motherhood and embraces feminism. The two are intimately and complexly intertwined.
