The Vassar Devils is a small co-ed acappella group out of Vassar College started in 1987 by a secretive group known only as "The Illuminati". We are known around Vassar and in venues up and down the East Coast for our strong musicianship, diverse repertoire, and tight group sound. People have told us that one of their favorite things about watching the Devils live in concert is the way we balance our poise and professionalism with a wacky sense of humor. We're serious musicians that care deeply about contantly tightening and enriching our group sound, but we like to get down and have a good time just as much as the next group. If you make it out to one of our concerts, expect great music, but also Michael Jackson dance lessons, audience singalongs, Mad Libs, disco jams, pitchforks, and stuffed animals flying through the air.
The group, whose membership is constantly changing as seniors graduate and new freshman enter the world of Vassar Acappella, typically ranges from 9 to 13 members, with 12 being the ideal number. This gives us enough volume and vocal diversity to put on dynamic shows, but not so much that we lose a grasp on our ability to blend into sweet, sweet harmonies.
We'll sing anything- Sinatra, Regina Spektor, Boyz II Men, Boston, Ella Fitzgerald, Nickel Creek, The Fray, David Bowie, and more - the only criteria is that the song should have a rockin solo and background parts that are exciting and complex. The more diverse our repertoire, the greater our ability to reach a wider audience, be it an auditorium lined with Vassar kids, a hospital cafeteria full of veterans, or an assembly hall packed with rowdy 8 year olds.
We are a not-for-profit group that channels all of its CD and gig revenues into future touring and CD production efforts. Basically, every cent we make goes right back into making more great acappella - you might say we live for the music!
