It is with deep regret we announce the Line-of-Duty-Death of firefighter Mark W. Keene, 28 year Life member of the Scott Township Hose Co., Montdale, PA on Saturday, February 21, 2009. Mark collapsed at the scene of a water rescue, at a pond on his property, near his residence. He was treated at the scene, and transported to the hospital where he was pronounced dead approximately 1 hour twenty minutes later, at 1:51 P.M. A five year old girl playing in the yard had fallen into the partially frozen pond. Mark called (911) the Lackawanna Co. Emergency Operations Center to have the Dalton Fire Co., Scott Twp. Hose Co. and Scott’s Water Rescue Team dispatched for “a child through the ice in the pond”. Mark then ran to retrieve a ladder in order to attempt a rescue of the child. In the meantime the child’s mother franticly entered the pond and she now required rescue. Mark’s Stepson, Willard “Billy Keene” Van Fleet, entered the pond and was able to help the mother out of the water and eventually also get the child out onto the ice, before slipping beneath the surface himself. Sometime during this time, Mark had carried the ladder to the pond, laid it out on the ice to the water and held it to assist the victims from the water. This is where he collapsed and was found unresponsive by emergency responders upon their arrival on scene. The severely hypothermic mother and daughter were immediately transported by ambulance to the hospital for treatment. Mark Keene was administered CPR, and treated by paramedics while being transported by ambulance to the hospital. After an exhaustive search of the pond by divers from five NEPA area dive rescue teams, the body of Billy Van Fleet was retrieved. He was pronounced dead at 3:53 P.M A memorial service with full honors for Mr. Keene is scheduled for Sunday, March 1, 2009 at the Scott Twp. Hose Co. station, State Route 438 in Montdale, PA.
