Biography
WATCH THE SING-OFF ON NBC THIS FALL TO GET YOUR SONOS FIX ON!!
The beginnings of Sonos involve many complicated details, but the short version of the story is that the six of us met through school & various singing connections in LA, & then connected with our creative/business partner & friend, Hugo Vereker. Chris knew Rache, Jess knew Kathy, and former group member Paul Peglar introduced us to Ben. We're all pretty different types of singers, and studied very different facets of music & performance in school: Chris studied composition & music education (UCLA), Jess studied jazz performance (UCLA), Kathy studied jazz performance & jazz composition (Berklee College of Music/UCLA), Rache studied opera (USC), and Ben studied opera & acting (UC Irvine). Hopefully those different musical colors & influences come through in our music :)
We also love working with electronics in both our live show & in our recordings. This aspect of our music has grown from when we first started performing with just an octave pedal and a loop station, and these days has expanded to include many other fun gadgets, such as a harmonizer, delay pedal, phase shifter, and EQ pedals. In the future, we hope to have all kinds of crazy toys with us on stage to expand our sound & ignite our live show.
Our first album, Sonosings (2009), covers some of our favorite indie artists - Radiohead, Bjork, Imogen Heap, Fleet Foxes, Bird and the Bee. We attempted to pick songs that were not obvious choices for all-vocal adaptations. With others, we tried to turn them completely upside down, striping them of most of their recognizable qualities while trying to preserve the essence of the original song. The album was produced by Hugo Vereker & our very own Chris Given Harrison, and mixed by Christopher Given Harrison & the amazing Gabriel Mann.
Since the release of our debut album, we've been touring touring touring non-stop! Life on the road has actually become a part of our careers that we love & find strangely comforting. Lucky for us, we do feel like a family, enjoy spending long hours together crammed into a minivan, and love exploring places that none of us have ever been. Even more than that, touring has connected us to thousands of fans who have become an integral part of our story - Something we love more than anything else is meeting new people and sharing our music with them.
Our second album celebrates the beauty of wintertime, something we don't get too much of in LA, but have gotten to know & appreciate since touring. December Songs (2010), was recorded in the middle of summer while were home in LA, and was tracked, mixed, and produced by our wonderful Christopher Given Harrison. With this album, we tried to personify the feelings that one has during the wintertime, rather than a collection of Holiday songs that you would hear in a department store...although we wouldn't mind it being played in one :)
2011 brings a new chapter for us with the departure of group member Paul Peglar & the new chapter of Sonos as 5 people! We're continuing to tour throughout the winter & spring, and working on our new album of ALL ORIGINAL MUSIC which will be released fall 2011! We're so excited & eager to share our new songs with our amazing fans. Much ♥
