It's Spring of 1995 in Washington, DC. A friend invited me to play some records at a house party. Double Barrel Soundsystem was created. Back then it was Selecter Scientifik, then Old El Paso...now, the Double Barrel Soundsystem. From House Parties to Monthy Shows (Open Season @ Pandemonium, DUBsonic @ Chief Ike's, SoundClash DC @ The Marx Cafe) to successful one-off's at places like The Black Cat, The Metro Cafe, Kingpin, Kaffa House and many others.
As a resident DJ for the famed 9:30 club in DC, DB Sounds rotated records for countless bands including The Pietasters, Slackers, Bosstones, Toots and the Maytals, Less Than Jake and The Toasters.
In the summer of 1998, DB Sounds teamed up with two others to open La Cueva bar, a small hole in the wall on 18th street in Adams Morgan. Dubbed by Barstool weekly as "the countries only ska-centered bar", you can only imagine we weren't open too long. In fact, it ended up being more of a liquor co-op, with some great bands playing; Telegraph, Skavoovie and the Epitones, Mobtown, Regatta 69, The Royalties, The Drones, The Checkered Cabs, and many others.
In the summer of 2003 Double Barrel Soundsystem packed up the vehicle and made the move from Washington, DC to Las Vegas, NV. 2,500 miles later, and in a town with little to no culture in the sounds of ska, rocksteady, reggae and soul DB Sounds has picked up where it was left off in DC, playing numerous times at Downtown Las Vegas' monthly art festival, First Friday, The Art Park, The Art Bar, BJ's, Emergency Room Lounge, University Theatre, Cafe Roma, Jillian's, The Bunkhouse, House of Brews, The Dive Bar and even Aloha Laundry. Playing timeless tunes, Double Barrel continues to spin records and book bands in the Las Vegas and surrounding areas.
...that is, until a move to Austin, TX...
to be continued.
