"The land is like my child. How can I take money for the land? But they try to take our land. In this struggle, either I'll die or they'll die. I'll fight to the death to protect the land. It's better to die in this stuggle than let them take our land." - a Daechuri motherTelevision
Today, all of Daechuri and the surrounding land has been declared government property. According to the National Property Act: [Article 58] "Illegal use of government property will result in 2 years imprisonment and hard labor, or a fine of at least $7, 000." For the residents, simply living in their homes, farming their lands, is a crime. "Of course, next years crops are ready. Pepper and rice seed are all prepared. Everything is ready... Even with the decision made [by the government, to declare living on the land illegal], we have struggled and protested up to now. We cannot leave this place. We built a new house thinking we'd live here until we died. We're not afraid." - Villager Bang Seung-Ryul (70) "We're going to lose, because it's the government. But me, why am I holding on to my stuff like a fool? No matter how weak, I have to do my best to live... I'm just holding on and fighting. I'm holding onto this precious land and I'm not going to say "yes" if (someone) powerful presses down on me." - Villager Lee Sung-Lye (44)Heroes
The people of Pyeongtaek. They have such dedication. It's impossible to ignore. We believe in them.

We are 5 students who have heard the cry of the people of Pyeongtaek, South Korea. According to the powers that be, the United States military has relocated one of their many army bases on Pyeongtaek's farmland. Losing your land is no small deal as a farmer. This land is their home, their source of income, their pride and their joy. Their livelihood has been taken away and we as filmmakers believe the world should know their story. Together as a community, the people of Pyeongtaek have stood up for their farmland. They have held peaceful protests everyday for 680 days as of today, July 13th. They have created artwork throughout their community, expressing their pain and sorrow over this ordeal. Their artwork stands tall throughout the village in many different forms. Painted murals surround you as you walk past their homes. Recycled art sculpted into different geographic locations, political expressions, and symbols of peace or pain hit you at every turn. Inside the center of this village, bright and powerful hybrid art covers their walls expressing that they are a people who deserves to live at peace in their original land. We believe this artwork is beyond extraordinary and know that these people are as well. Would you like to get to know the people of Pyeongtaek, South Korea? Are you curious about their story? Please join us as we explore this village and are welcomed by these incredibly courageous and creative individuals.
Who I'd like to meet:
We'd like to meet anyone who would like to contribute ideas or imagery for our documentary. Any images such as video or still photography would be incredibly appreciated. We would be especially interested in images of people involved in creating or amongst the Pyeongtaek community artwork. Together we can make a difference and generate imperative dialogue of this pressing issue. 2ChairsFor5@gmail.comDetails
