Bio
Grew up in Battersea listening to 60's, 70's and 80's Pop, Reggae, early Hip-Hop and Rock & Roll thanks mainly to my mum’s love for music. I learnt to count beats through dance classes when I was 8 (shame). Used to break-dance on Lino at our local community centre, L.A.R.A. to the sounds of EPMD, ERIC B and Rakim, Dougie Fresh, and loads of electro which we used to bodypop to. Got heavily into Hip-Hop and skating at 12. Age 14 I heard 1st hardcore tune, I was amazed at how hard you had to concentrate to follow the beats. I was hooked from there, I started going to clubs aged 15, god knows how I used to get in to some of them but I only got denied entry once. But lucky for me that I did because I got to witness the evolution of Hardcore into Jungle and then into Drum & Bass as a raver, and as a DJ. Started DJ'ing at 15 and after 3 months was on pirate station, Don FM, After 2 appearances I was approached by a friend who said they were starting their own station and asked me to be one of their DJ's. I was on Flex FM the first day of transmission and DJ R2 was born. Used to be 8pm - 10pm Saturday evening and 10am - 12noon Sunday morning - I sometimes used to sleep in the studio. In late 95 I got into playing US House under the name of “Samuel James” and over the next 3 years my tastes evolved further. I also started playing UK Garage and then "Speed Garage" when it started to be called that. This led to my first ever residency in a club - The Gardening Club at Covent Garden (Prohibition every Wednesday). By 99 I started thinking about production seriously. In 2000 I started my BTEC National Diploma in Music Technology at South Thames College in Wandsworth where I met Andy – DJ Acee, and Bill - DJ Reaction, started going round to Bills house, he showed me how to use samplers and Logic (we were using Cubase at College). Bill was a real Drum and Bass soldier with a true arsenal of vinyl, and he helped me catch up with the 2 years I had missed of Drum and Bass. While I had been playing what I thought was good at the time, dnb had evolved into something new and better, it was like the old days, you really had to listen again to hear all the intricacies in the programming. I then started to make my own tunes. In 2005 I moved house, and just down the road from me was a small club called INIGO, where I ended up working as a studio manager/engineer for a while, the experience was great I got to work with all sorts of people from live bands to Rappers. I’ve also DJ’d at INIGO a bit from time to time and I even promoted and organised an dnb event there called Gravity. My original idea was to do what I love, and that is drum and Bass so that is mainly what I try to make, but I like to try other genres as well. My dj career of 17 years has been mainly pirate radio but I have rocked a few clubs in my time. At present I am working hard to get my portfolio of music finished, as well as organising an event for Bass Records and way4ward. I am also looking forward to the further development of our website where people will be able to download our productions, listen to our mixes and find out about future events. www.bassrecords.co.uk ...... .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. ...... -
