Gyft
Hip-Hop Artist/Song-writer/Ghost-writer
Southern lyricists are somewhat of a rarity in Hip-Hop. The south is known more for banging out hard hitting club music heavy on trunk rattling than on lyricism, and those artists recognized as wordsmiths come few by many. The next generation of artists however have a completely obscure perspective of hip-hop music not hesitating to push the envelope with creativity. The recent years have revealed a completely fresh and new meaning to today’s hip-hop artist. The word 'artist' has three definitions according to the Encarta Dictionary. Two of them describe an artist as: a very talented, and skilled person; the other is: a performer and/or entertainer. This collection of words very well describes Austin, Texas Hip-Hop recording artist, Gyft.
Born 1983 in Midland, Texas the name Matthew means, "Gift from God", hence his M.C. title. This is clearly no coincidence, seeing how lyricism is merely the beginning of this eccentric artists’ talents. Since the moment he learned to read & write he has experimented with poetry and creative writing. As a child he was the always at the top of the class progressing in academics faster than most of his classmates especially in english and mathematics. A dramatic roller-coaster ride of childhood and adolescent experiences attribute to his compelling story that read like a modern-day television drama. His emotional struggle through various family crisis drive his narrative imaginative nature in his music. He credits much of his inspiration to the era of his early youth during the Post-Cold War era and the effects of Raeganomics leading to the birth of hip-hop and its effects on small-town American culture.
In the world of repetitive Hip-Hop Gyft brings something slightly different to the industry. His childhood doesn’t consist of memories of a life on the streets of any metropolitan American city but rather a small west Texas setting filled with adolescent debauchery and early adult tribulations. He isn’t your typical hip-hop artist as his appearance doesn’t fit the ideal description that comes to mind when you hear the term ”rapper.” He uses his own carved style of fashion and attitude to shape his artistic image with a more casual, comfortable approach. He writes, records, and performs all of his own material, developing greatly after every studio session. He hopes to become one of the more profound lyricists in Hip-Hop and derives his influence from numerous song-writers in all genres of music. Examples of his biggest influences include 2pac, Notorious B.I.G, Eminem, Ice Cube, Dr. Dre, Talib Kweli, Mos Def, Rakim, Outkast, UGK, Michael Jackson, Prince, Bob Marley, Jimmy Hendrix, Bob Dylan, The Beatles, Boyz II Men, The Rolling Stones, Lynyrd Skynard, Elton John, as well as dozens of other artists that have helped shaped today’s popular culture.
His lyrical style triggers deep thought and insight as well and carries a variety of wordplay that combine with his own unique method of story telling. By using an in-depth lyrical versatility and imaginative rhyme schemes, he takes you through his unique perspective of hip-hop culture and its influence on him from childhood through his early twenties. Much of the topics in his songs include references from a vast array of literal interests he studies including: philosophy, social sciences, psychology, and other areas of liberal arts that read like a college course-book. Though he delivers a catchy, patterned rhyme style he is known for his extensive vocabulary in which he delivers with an eloquence his listeners can feel and relate to.
Fans have given a mixed response that attract them to “G” rather, Gyft’s music. Some point to his unique style and say his lyrics identify well with the mood of the beats he chooses for song-writing. Some claim his voice has a relaxing effect while others feel the energy he brings to his music; whatever the reason, he is a natural born entertainer. He takes his approach to the music from a need to connect with the listener on an in depth emotional level in order to gain an understanding with the fans of his music and does so with a style and sensitivity completely his own. In the words of his Beloved cousin C.S. Lopez, “We all need a lil’ Gyft in our lives.”
Gyft wishes to become an accomplished lyricist in not only ghost-writing rap music, but also R&B, Pop, and various types of Alternative music. Due to his love for all genres of music he also has long-term goals to achieve his dream and build an entertainment empire combining all forms of music all while continuing to break down social barriers and spread a universal message. As many artists often do, he would also like the opportunity to work in hollywood and pursue a career in acting alongside his musical endeavors. Because of his educational history and families’ deep business background he is committed to using ingenious marketing schemes and promotional plans in order to build a continuous buzz as a force in all forms of entertainment for much time to come as the next generation of entertainers emerge onto the spotlight.
