TMJ formed in the early 1980s when its members were still in high school. The initial plan was to play cover versions of Clash songs at high school dances, but no one else in the band's hometown had apparently heard of the Clash, so they started writing their own material. They self-released their debut LP, Green Eggs and Crack, in 1987, then bounced around a bunch of indie and major labels in the '90s. Some people enjoyed their humorous lyrics. Others detected fragile hearts beating beneath the layers of irony. Still others simply admired the band's ability to somehow connect with an audience while flailing about in a genuinely spastic and inebriated manner on stage.
After a long lay-off, the band regrouped for a performance on May 4, 2007 at New York City's Knitting Factory to celebrate drummer Tommy Vinton's retirement from the NYPD. Tim and Jay have a group called Wonderlick; Sandy and Tommy are part of a power trio with Steve Hamilton called Surface Wound (http://www.myspace.com/surfacewound). William Wittman continues to produce records and tour with Cyndi Lauper. The future is truly unwritten.
I can honestly say seeing TMJ at Bogies in Albany (Finally) was the coolest time I ever had seeing a band. Great show, lots of fun. My buddy caught the key you threw out, but as far as it being for your motel room that was indeed a lie. Hope you guys come up to Albany either in side projects or dare I hope together. Wish you all the best.
I was stoked to find this page...I saw you play at the Stone Pony years ago and we had a blast...the show was amazing and we listened to your songs religiously at parties for who knows how long! I found you guys on youtube as well and shared with several of our friends... please come to Jersey!!!
So she said **** this town, nothin ever goin' round.. spun myself into the ground.. thats what the Texas panhandle will do for ya. Oppression breeds creativity...did I mention how clever I am?
Hi TMJ,thank you for adding.
I wanna hear from you guys, give me some message on my myspace.
Cause there's no one who came to my page yet...though I wrote some songs and uploded...
There's no artistic friend in my country... people suck.
By giving me a message,You can give me a extraordinary joy and hope than you expected.
Thanks for the add. I'm having total flashbacks from just about 20 years ago and seeing Too Much Joy live and having SUCH a blast! So happy to be connecting with other TMJ fans.
Peace, Sue
