About Tunakie

About Tunakie/2nakie; the Queen of Otjaka!

Tunakie/2nakie, a Namibian artist, was born in exile, in Luanda, Angola, and until she was eight years old, Namibia was only this mythical land brought to her through song and the memories and dreams of others. At independence her family moved here, where she was raised by her grandmother in the village of Ontananga, while her mother furthered her studies.

Stage Name: 2nakie/Tunakie

Real Name: Maria Tuna-Omukwathi Uushona

Hobbies: Singing, dancing, travelling and listening to good music

Favorite music: African traditional music, contemporary and modern African music as well as soft music when feeling lonely.

Awards and Achievements:

2nakie has won the Sanlam/NBC Best Traditional Artist award in 2004, 2005 and 2007. She definitely remains unique and the Queen of Otyaka.

What is Otyaka?

The word Otyaka in Oshiwambo (a widely spoken language in Namibia) means a beautiful woman. It is used also to mean a type of music performed by very beautiful women and danced by physically fit men.

What is unique about 2nakie’s music?

2nakie is the young Namibian lady who has decided to go back to her roots and discover the beautiful melodies of the Aawambo and take them to the modern times by introducing modern instruments and making the music modern and yet remaining based on the Aawambo song and dance of the past.

Her music takes you to the old days and brings you to the modern times of Namibia. Nobody else can do that in Namibia except 2nakie.
