About me:
I started belly dancing at the age of 18 with my
mom and aunt. We began taking classes for fun and I never thought it would be something that would take over my entire life. In many ways it is difficult for me to separate this dance form from my everyday life. It has altered the way that I think about art, performance, women, and the world. I feel, as a performer and teacher, it is essential to create a better understanding of this often misunderstood form of dance. There are many stereotypes which surround this form of dance and it is my goal to question and challenge these ideas. Dance is entertainment but more importantly I see it as tool for expressing oneself on many different levels. Belly Dancing gives women the opportunity to be a part of a community that is unique, supportive and creative. The most amazing aspect of belly dance is the fact that it calls out to women of all walks of life. There are no rules about appearance, race, religion, or culture. The positive nature of the belly dance community gives me hope for a world that so often feels disjointed.
