  • Bio

Started in Autumn 2007 after being booked for a gig, The 309s worked up a set of songs popular in the southern states of America from the 1930's to the 1950's. We love the swinging rhythms that filled the bars and clubs at that time from Texas to Tennessee, and this forms the heart of the 309s sound. With Ian Tothill's stunning fiddle playing, and Roddy Boyes' hard hitting vocals, The 309s are complete... Our sound is strongly acoustic with no electric instruments. As well as fiddle, Ian also hurts your ears with his trumpet. Add a bit of tin sandwich and you have the unique 309's sound.

  • Influences

..Bob Wills ... Hank Williams ... Lefty Frizzell ... Johnny Cash ... Elvis Presley ... Louvin Brothers..... The 309's name comes from the Johnny Cash Song ..Like the 309... This is supposedly the last song John ever wrote and recorded. We're all great Cash fans and of course sad that he's now gone. The "309" is the number of a train, hence our logo. Our big Cash number is ..Big River.., all about chasing love down the mighty Mississippi... Another major influence on The 309's is Western Swing. We play quite a few Bob Wills numbers such as ..My Window Faces the South, Brain Cloudy Blues, Woah Babe.. and ..Bring It On Down To My House... We'll even give Johnnie Lee Wills' "Smoke Smoke Smoke" a blast if you ask... We play a few blues numbers and some rock & roll numbers (such as Elvis' ..Blue River..) with a special 309's reinterpretation. We also play a little country with a swing beat from the likes of Hank Williams (including ..Long Gone Lonesome Blues..) and the Louvin Brothers (..Cash On The Barrelhead..). We love that pre-rock & roll sound from around 1950, when country and swing songs were given rock style beats, rhythms and bass patterns, which together with R&B brewed up the rockabilly sound. In fact there's also some jump blues and the odd R&B number in our set list. Our percussion is kept pretty light most of the time, and our drummer Tim is limited to an old suitcase for a kick drum... We're also great fans of a little known contemporary of Hank Williams called Lefty Frizzell. Lefty had a great voice strongly influenced by Jimmie Rodgers, and some great songs to go with it. We play his ..If You've Got The Money, Honey.. and ..Always Late With Your Kisses...
