Interests

  • General

Lounging at home with the family, gardening/farming, Jenny, playing with Malia, reading (if I get the chance), cooking, grocery shoppinig, eating, looking at seed/nursery stock/farm supply catalouges, watching movies, hanging out with friends and family, myspace (all of a sudden), substitute teaching, pronouns, all types of music, playing soccer and basketball, daydreaming about the garden and chickens, illegal street racing, tagging, smoking crack, gorilla pimping.
  • Music

I like really most anything. I don't think that I can say there is one genre that I am not at all into. I have been let down lately by a lot of contemporary pop, especially the new corporate gangsta rap. I liked gangsta rap when it was mainly west coast and all they talked about were "bitches/hos", smoking weed, shooting people and lowriders. Now that the lyrics include this as well as being iced up and selling yourself and especially some brandname or other I can say that I am turned off by it. I have to say that despite this, some of the dirty south stuff is pretty catchy.

In terms of bands, this list could go on forever. Maybe I'll fill this out when I have more time.

  • Movies

I love watching movies though we hardly go out to the cinema anymore. Being a parent has partially halted this, but the movie prices too are crazy. Remember when matinees cost $3.50? Remember double feature night Thursdays at the Eagle for 2 bucks? What the hell is $10.00 about? That being said, I love movies and believe that film should come in the from of art and storytelling or entertainment or both. Sadly I see the movie industry strongly skewed towards mindless movies with only entertainment value to them. There do seem to be a lot of good movies out there still, though. Our Netflix Queue has about 220 movies in it. Do you ever think that there are just too many movies made? Don't you think about fifteen a year would be good? In terms of favorites, I'll think about that and get back to it.

  • Television

I used to watch quite a bit of tv as a kid, adolescent and young adult, though none or close to none in college. When we moved to our new place, we couldn't get reception without cable and couldn't afford cable right away. What started out as an economic choice soon became a life choice. Not having tv has been wonderful. We actually talk to each other, we carefully think of what to do with our precious free time when otherwise we would just fall back on the tv for entertainment or background noise. We waste a lot less time and it is really nice not having a show that we "can't miss". We do watch movies and I enjoy going to other houses and getting little tastes of pop culture. I do feel at times out of the loop culturally but this deficit doesn't outweigh the benifits of no tv. Most of the time, what we see on the television (in little glimpses) is more frightening than addicting.
  • Books

Anything having to do with growing vegetables and fruits or raising animals. I'm a huge sucker for Harry Potter (thanks babe) and Tolkien (I was a closet nerd until the films came out. I'm really picky about cooking stuff but I love reading good food related stuff. I haven't read a novel in quite some time but I used to love Hemingway and Steinbeck. I've been really into Goldilocks and the Three Bears, Goodnight Moon, and Wibly Pig lately. More later.
  • Heroes

My Tata Honey, my mom, Jenny, Malia, my Nana Rosario, my Tio Turi and Tia Laura, Mr. Kevany and Sonia. Reasons are private. You can ask if you're interested.

Blurbs

About me:

I'm a 28 year old (though I still find that hard to believe) living in los angeles with my beautiful wife and baby. I have lived a largely charmed life being the recipient of love from so many of my friends and family. I hope that others feel I have given some of this back into the world.

Though I have been so fortunate throughout my lifetime and despite the immense loss of my Tata last December, I feel that I am living the best part of my life right now, that is, I am happier than I have ever been. I have an incredibly loving and lovable wife, Jenny and a wonderful daughter with a beautiful mellow soul, Malia. We are very private, though you wouldn't know from my being on myspace and spilling all this out to friends, family and total strangers, and few people truly know what it is that we have.

My mother is probably the nicest, most selfless person in the world and is the best Mimi ever. My sister was a social firefly and is becoming one again. She is getting fiestier by the hour (this is a good thing!). She's the greatest sister and tia to Malia. Though my relationship with my father has had some strain on it lately, we are still close and I enjoy our time together. I have a set of first cousins who are like brothers and sisters to me. My best friends I've known for most of my life and though we don't see each other as much anymore, I regard them as my family. I don't talk to many people from high school, but in most cases this is a really good thing (except for Tim of course). My college friends and I have completely lost touch but I'd love to reconnect with them.

Lately I've become very interested in agriculture which I think I must have had instilled in me by my parents and grandparents. This interest originally came about from being a foodie but has since taken on a very important place in my life. Jenny not only puts up with my being a wanna-be farmer, but she helps!!!

I feel that I am probably one of the luckiest people alive. We are living a simple but completely fulfilling life. Though my personal life is so good, I do feel saddened when observing the problems of our world. I get increasingly frustrated by the state of American society and the direction that I can see it headed. I feel that materialism, ignorance, celebrity/entertainment worship, and violence are spreading and becoming the dominant forces of our culture, and no one seems to care. Have you ever heard of "bread and circus"? If you know me, you'll know that I can talk for hours about this and some of my friends and Sonia, my sister, get incredibly annoyed at me about this. Luckily, Jenny and Malia don't seem to mind. Anyway, this is probably way too long already. If you're still reading, nice to see you again or nice to meet you.
