    Bart's Interests
GeneralMusic, music, music, books (about music), films (about music), recording and music. Oh yeah, I like concerts as well...
MusicOn the premise that there are only two types of music, the kind you like and the kind you dont like, my musical tastes are all over the place. My first love is the sixties mod and garage scene, powerpop and punk, followed by classical, jazz, singer-songwriter and pop, then hip hop, Spanish music, and ESPECIALLY local San Diego groups. Favorite acts? How much time you have? I like any band Morgan Young has ever been in and any group that either John Reis or Robbie Rist have performed with. Plus, in no particular order, music from sixties Disney Films or Dick Van Dyke, The Zombies , Emitt Rhodes , Los Brincos, Wings , Jellyfish, The Beatles, The Jam and ALL things Weller, Wire , The Kinks, Cape May, Rain Parade, Cri Cri (Mexican kids records from the 50's and a bigger influence on the Shambles than you might suspect:-), Elton John (c'mon you know the early 70's stuff was genuis pop!) , Elvis Costello, The Osmonds (you heard right - Phase III and Crazy Horses are both powerpop classics!), AJ Croce, Buzzkill Romantics, Mark DeCerbo, The Hitmakers, The Penetrators (the San Diego late 70's early 80's group), The Nashville Ramblers and offshoots, The Crawdaddys (all the various lineups), the Trebels, Louis XIV, Irradio, The Melanies, Dizzy, Sugarplastic , Kate Bush , XTC, Samuel Barber (classical), Gustavo Romero, Augustin Lara, Vicente Fernandez, Gilbert Castellanos, The Yardbirds, Matthew Sweet, The Plimsouls & Peter Case, Psychedelic Furs, 20/20 , The Who, Bobby Darin , Neil Finn & Split Enz (one of the best shows I ever saw), Teenage Fanclub, Harry Mancini, Big Star, The Beat, The Onlookers , Supertramp, Chicago, The Action , Mod Fun , Rookie Card, The Pursuit Of Happiness, The Mockers, The Wondermints, Stew, Jigsaw Seen, The Stereotypes (you must hear these guys! brilliant), The Remains, The Lovin Spoonful, The Dragons, Squeeze, Jason Falkner & The Grays, Walter Clevenger, The Rooks, Big Star, The Coyote Problem, Chardon Square, Modest Proposal, Rinaldi Sings, Boo Hewerdine, Plot To Blow Up The Eiffel Tower, Scarlet Symphony, The Beat Farmers, Cindy Lee Berryhill, No Knife, Polara, Klattu, The Pursuit Of Happiness, NRBQ, Sam Phillips (both the Sun records producer and the former Christian singer), Todd Rundgren, Richard X Heyman, Cheap Trick, Squire, The Jetset, Mood Six, The Times, Angel (That Magic Touch!), The Killers, Silver Sunhine, The Beach Boys, Firetown, Starz (they were GREAT live), Babys, Badfinger, Byrds, Birds, The Funseekers and a zillion more....
MoviesI don't watch many unless there's a music aspect to it, but that said Bunny Lake is Missing (Otto Preminger and the Zombies), Rope (Alfred Hitchcock), That Darn Cat (Disney), Mary Poppins (The Sherman brothers rule!) The Jokers (with Oliver Reed and Michael Crawford), Quadraphenia (naturally:-), Northwoods Holiday (with the Funseekers), Stardust (David Essex's only great role) and The Comic (with Dick Van Dyke) are amongst the ones I'll gladly watch again.
Television...I dont watch much, but when I'm home I always try to catch Leno's monologue. I mean come on - watch TV when there are tons of cool clubs and bands to check out?
BooksPaul Williams has always been an inspiration, also Jim Carroll's "Basketball Diaries," anything by Ray Bradbury or any of Dan Clowes or Peter Bagge's graphic novels make a great way to make a plane ride bearable. Well that and a lot of alcohol...
HeroesAgain too many to list, but Lennon/McCartney, Weller and John Kass (thanks for everything John:-) come to mind...

   Bart's Blurbs
About me:
Hmm. We'll start with the fact that I'm a massive insomniac (I HATE sleeping- I might miss something:-) I'm writer by trade and a musician because I cant do anything else:-) In the past, amongst other things, I worked at two of the greatest record stores ever, Licorice Pizza and Off the Record. I also spent 11 years working for Capitol Records (yes, the big round building in Los Angeles and I moonlighted for Chrysalis, Angel, Enigma, EMI, Rhino, SBK...) As a scribe, I've penned liners and bios for many groups and albums in the U.S., Europe and Japan, as well as writing for many San Diego publications (The Reader, San Diego Union Tribune and Night & Day, Citybeat, Downtown News, Beach & Bay Press, The Beacon Penninsula, The La Jolla Village News, The Troubadour, The La Jolla Light , Music Matters, Pacific Beach Life, North Park News etc) and many national and international mags as well. I usually have three or four pieces running a week in various publications, and yes it's true - I have seven pen names I use in the press and liners, but no I wont say which ones:-) My life is all music all the time. Currently I am helming a small indie label, Blindspot Records, working with San Diego based artists. Bandwise, in the eighties I was front man with Manual Scan, one of the last groups signed through IRS distro offshoot Faulty Products. In 1992 I became part of the Shambles, the group started by Manual Scan's Kevin Donaker Ring after the bands split. The Shambles are still going strong (check our website www.theshambles.net for regular updates) and I also play bass with jangle popsters The Spring Collection. I've also recently formed a new group, True Stories, alongside Danny Cress and Joe Poma.I do play solo gigs from time to time and occasionally strum alongside the likes of Static Halo's Dylan Martinez's or Four Eyes frontman Mark DeCerbo. I also work with roughly a dozen other bands on thier recording projects. I've been very fortunate to perform at some very cool spots around the globe, including The Marquee, The 100 Club, El Sol, Rancho Grande, The Casbah and many others, and have penned songs that many artists have covered (Canada's Kingpins "Plan Of Action", the Lola's "I Cant Dont Want To," The Eddies "Jungle Beat," Marie Haddad's "Where You Are," Glowfriends "Blindspot" etc.) with "Survive" (co-written with the brilliant Jeppe Riddervold) winning first place in the 2003 EMI Publishing Awards held in Berlin. I guess thats basically me. I just re-read this an it seems a bit much, but then again I guess you wouldn't be reading this if you weren't interested :-)

If you'd like to find out more about my music related projects check out The Shambles website: The Shambles- it's continually updated with a detailed discography, pages on recording sessions, photos, side projects, covers, memorabilia and much more. To hear some tunes check out: MySpace.com/TheShambles while Manual Scan can be found at: MySpace.com/manualscan

Who I'd like to meet:
I've been lucky enough to meet a lot of my heroes over the years (mostly work related) but Mark Twain, John Lennon, Samuel Barber, Emitt Rhodes, Alfred Hitchcock, Walt Disney, Jim Carroll, Shelley (the poet), and the young Aundrey Hepburn would be amongst my wish list, if in most cases not very likely... ****UPDATE! I met Emitt Rhodes....:-)

I had just printed and distributed posters for my CD release show when someone informed me that I forgot to put the venue on the poster.  I'm going to sleep before I mess something else up. Coffee and donuts eat brain cells.
