About me:

Real Name: Ernest Nsimbi Year of Birth: 1983(Into a family of three) GNL is a multi faceted Ugandan Hip Hop artist who uses Luganda and English to express himself. He is also a songwriter and poet with the ability to come up with music video scripts. He does also have a desire to get into the feature film industry. His love for philosophy inspired him to use the initials GNL; originating from the Aztec civilisation saying; “At the Highest Degree of Self Expression, you achieve Greatness of No Limits” GNL views his music as rhyme and poetry in Luganda and English. He expresses African Pride and love for African culture in his careful weaving of stories and its been said that his lyrics are not only humorous, but they evoke social consciousness and the spirit of pan africanism. GNL is currently working on his album Koyi Koyi: Riddles of Life. In it, he expresses the dreams and aspirations of Africa’s youth and the difficulties they and the rest of the continent are going through to achieve them. GNL’s musical journey. GNL, first broke onto the scene in 2005. ( At the time he was a model with Arapapa Modelling Agency). In that year, he won the “ Best Freestyle Rapper in Kampala” competition hosted on EAST AFRICA TV show, KAMPALA WIRED. He was then spotted by MUSIC UGANDA founder, Paul Mwandah a.k.a. P Tech ( R.I.P.) and producer Moses Sabiiti a.k.a. MMC of LITTLE RED STUDIOS. These two were hip hop enthusiasts and the founders of the HIP HOP FOUNDATION. They played a key role in convincing GNL that he had the talent to become a hip hop aficionado. These are some of his projects to date. Ÿ Manning the Hip Hop Foundation treasury 2005/2006. Ÿ Performing and event organising for the Hip Hop Foundation. Ÿ Hip Hop Canvas project, (Music and Message) sponsored by GTZ and the German Embassy. Ÿ PAM awards Hip Hop song of the year 2005. Mother Africa by the Hip Hop All Stars. Ÿ Video Script writer for Mother Africa. Ÿ Co-writer for Mother Africa and Hypocrites for the Hip Hop All Stars. Ÿ Collaborated on modern slavery song with Klear Kut, Sylvester and Abramz, Emma Katya and Lyrical G. Ÿ Performed a song Awakening African consciousness with Indigenous, a Swedish hip hop group 2006. Ÿ Performed at Positive Black Soul Project at Makerere University. An event starring Senegalese rapper Awadi and sponsored by Alliance Francaise. Ÿ Performed alongside Jua Kali, AY and DJ Oil at Platinum Entertainments Hip Hop Music Carnival hosted by Ange Noir and sponsored by Uganda Telecom. Ÿ Modelled, rapped and recited original poetry at Xenson’s Uganda Fashion Exhibition at Blue Mango, sponsored by Alliance Francaise. 2006. Ÿ Performed at Uganda AIDS day event sponsored by USAID and organised by Dennis Maganda of Down Town entertainment. Ÿ Performed at the World Music day festival at Sabrina’s Pub. An event sponsored by Alliance Francaise. Ÿ Performed at Iryn Namubiru’s launch of her album Y’ono at Sesse Gateway Beach. An event sponsored by Bell Lager. Ÿ Performed at Sweet Kid’s launch of his album Kiba Kibi at Steak Out. An event sponsored by Uganda Telecom. Ÿ Performed at Jua Kali’s Independence Day Show. Ÿ Performed at The MTN Big Brother Eviction party at Faze II Ÿ Performed at the MTN Campus Festival at MUBS. Ÿ Performed as a crowd rousing act at the Amakula Film festival. Ÿ Performed at launch of GTV Football League at Namboole. Ÿ Performed at the MTN School’s Hip Hop Festival Ÿ Performed on the Buzz Magazine school tour. Ÿ Performed as a crowd rousing opening act at K-Ci and Jojo’s Kampala show. Ÿ Performed at the Bayimba Music Festival. Ÿ Modeled for Latif Deisgns at the the Bayimba music festival. Ÿ Performed at Rasheeda’s “The Crunk Cook out” Ÿ Head line artist for the words and pictures(W.A.P.I) project organized by the British council GNL has also proven to be a crowd favourite at Spot Afters’ STARS NIGHT, Steak Out’s HIP HOP vs. DANCE HALL night, Steak Out’s UTAKE NIGHT and Rock Catalina’s CLUB RELOADED to mention a few as well as various clubs including Club Silk and Sway. He is also considered one of the key crowd pullers for Hot 100’s Hip Hop Night. He has collaborated with various artistes in East Africa and shared a stage with Jua Kali, Klear Kut, Lyrical G, Awadi, AY, Dubees of K South, Percussion Discussion, Bella, Papito, Evon Nabeta, Bataka Underground among others. His most recent collaborations include; Move It with Navio and Charlie King, Calypso with Kaweesa and Willy Mukabya and Kwafate with AY(set for release later in the year).
