Joseph's Interests
|
| General | Motorcycling, poetry, language-theory, communication, psychology, computers, UNIX systems administration, computer real time strategy video games, reading. | | Music | Depeche Mode, Bjork, George Michael, Kate Bush, The Waterboys, The Cure, The Sundays, The Smiths, Morrissey, Sisters of Mercy, Peter Murphy, Nine Inch Nails, Garbage, Fiona Apple, The Cranberries, Alanis Morissette, Queen, Psychedelic Furs | | Movies | Idiocracy, V for Vendetta, American Beauty, Ghost in the Shell, Love me if you dare, Airplane, Top Secret, Alien, Aliens, Alien3, Memento, AI, Blade Runner, Minority Report, Undercover Brother, I'm gonna get you sucka, Team America World Police. | | Television | TV is evil. It's worse than an opiate for the masses. Reality TV is a disease. Really. Don't believe me? Video tape yourself watching a few hours of reality TV, and then go back and watch it. Did you like it? Did it feel "real" to you?
That being said, on occasion I do indulge (or have indulged) in Black Adder (BBC), Law & Order (original, mostly), Alias, I love the 80's (VH1), I love the 90's (VH1), Mythbusters, and ST-TNG.
Addendum: I've become a Scrubs whore. Father, forgive me... | | Books | Most of R.A. Heinlein's writings (even though he's just an eeensy-weensy bit sexist), the Erthring cycle (Wayland Drew), "1984" (George Orwell), any of the Dune series (Frank Herbert), "SnowCrash" (Neal Stephenson), The Amber Series (Roger Zelazney), "Brave New World" (Aldous Huxley), I'm currently eating my way through Jeffery Deaver's Lincoln Rhyme novels. I loved "The Vanished Man," it was a real page turner. | | Heroes | Helen Keller; Rosa Parks; jews, blacks, women, and gays - people who've had to endure the some of the worst that humanity (or just rich, inseucre, ignorant, power-hungry white men) has (have) to offer (bigotry, persecution, prejudice, oppression). God, but don't we just love to hurt each other. It's very sad. |

About me:
I love my opera singer. I have 3 cats. I have a big brain. I believe in personal responsibility, integrity, and honor. I believe in capacity and self-actualization. I'm a geek. I try to balance my decisions as though I would both live forever and die tomorrow. I believe there's value in acknowledging impermanence. I'm given to both introversion and extroversion, although rarely at the same time. I was raised by a pack of wild corndogs. I try to balance everything with laughter. I love to laugh, and I love to cry. I love to make others laugh (I prefer "with", but sometimes I have to resort to "at"). I'm big on balance, too, in case you didn't get that. I prefer "truth" to "nice", both in terms of giving and getting. I'm rather forward, especially if you ask my opinion. I tend to be rather free with myself. I'm rather self-indulgent (I'm just such a nice guy, I don't have the heart to deny myself anything). I believe they call that hedonism. I tend to indulge my friends as well.
I like: Opera singers, Laughter, kitties, contrast, goth clubs, motorcycling, billiards, computing, reading, singing in the shower, conversing, holding hands, nuzzling, spooning, intimacy (tie between intellectual and emotional for first; physical second)

Who I'd like to meet:
I would love to meet some people who...
- have a love affair with the English language.
- can carry on a conversation about something abstract.
- think that the word "racist" is misused.
- don't need to be right (but like it anyways - see section on "vices").
- don't need to be humiliated to be humble.
- are capable of critical thought.
- aren't into dogma.
- understand the things they don't like.
- are able to self-monitor and self-censor.
- are capable of empathy.
- know that you can be a realist and have a positive attitude.
- are old enough to appreciate life and young enough to not be dead.
- know that life and death aren't mutually exclusive, that you can live your life in a way that makes a statement long after you're in the ground, and that you can also be so devoid of spirit that you can be dead while you're still breathing.
- gain nothing by demeaning others.
- know how to treat themselves and others with dignity.
- can embrace their vices and still live in moderation.
- know how to drive courteously (and even do so on occasion).
- don't feel a need to enforce their morality on others.
- aren't afraid to be weak.
- like to communicate and know how to listen.
- need challenges and know how to challenge themselves.
- believe that human interaction is the point of it all, that we are a gift to each other, that we are the finest that we can give.
You know... adults!
Did that list seem too long? Like a bit too much to ask of a mere mortal?
RAISE YOUR FUCKING EXPECTATIONS!!!
You don't have to be all that and a bag of chips - I'm no superman either. But really, people, if we're going to play the role of adults on TV, we might as well try practicing a little just once in a while in real life.
