The seven-piece Gypsophilia features Alec Frith, Nick Wilkinson and Ross Burns on guitars; Sageev Oore on piano and keyboards; Matt Myer on trumpet; Adam Fine on double bass and Gina Burgess on violin. Frith, Myer and Burns all play with the roots- Reggae band Verbal Warnin'; Myer is an ECMA and Juno winner with the Johnny Favorite Swing Orchestra; Fine plays regularly with Bend the River and improvising guitarist Jeff Torbert. Oore has been a featured soloist with Symphony Nova Scotia and a member of the Woodchoppers Association, while Burgess has also played with Symphony Nova Scotia and with the Maria Osende Flamenco Company. http://www.gypsophilia.org/ http://www.gypsophilia.org/images/posters/lrg_Seahorse%20Masquerade10_edit.jpg ____________________________________________________________________ URSULA JOHNSON ~ Instillation and performance Festival: Prismatic and Festival Nocturne [Interview live-in-studio: Monday October 11th/2010] Event Notice = October 16, 2010 Elmiet - Prismatic/Nocturne Roaming - culminating at Parade Square M’ikmaq visual artist, Ursula A. Young songwriter/composer Jeff Torbert’s compositions unfold like stories, sharing style and spirit with other great storytelling musicians such as Bill Frisell and Pat Metheny. Sprouting from the wisdom and mentorship of master-musicians Jerry Granelli and David Tronzo, Jeff Torbert has embraced the improvised approach to a music career. This has taken Torbert from busking at the Halifax Farmer’s Market through a degree in classical guitar to forming original improv trio TFC, and working as an improviser and composer who has collaborated with Fred Frith, Simon Fisk, Gordon Grdina and Marilyn Lerner. Torbert won the 2006 Galaxie Rising Star Award and has recorded for CBC, and has produced a live concert film of TFC (directed by Jeff Wheaton). He continues to collaborate with a diverse group of artists including dancer Gwen Noah and singer/songwriter Rich Aucoin. Earlier in 2009, Torbert expanded upon his trio TFC by adding four more of the best and brightest of Halifax’s young and creative music scene, and recording his debut solo album, This Weather Honest, co-produced with Dave Christensen (multi-instrumentalist/composer/arranger – Jenn Grant, Hawksley Workman, Symphony NS). http://www.jefftorbert.ca/ ____________________________________________________________________ JERRY GRANELLI - 12:00 Noon Interview Creative Music Workshop studio = 1313 Hollis Street {Recorded out-of-studio) ~ Record Feature on DEOTS Radio = Monday September 6th/2010 - live-to-air feature of new Recording from Jerry solo. Halifax-based percussionist-composer Jerry Granelli grew up in San Francisco where he studied with Joe Morello and drummed for pianists Denny Zeitlin and Vince Guaraldi (he's on A Charlie Brown Christmas - on Fantasy Records and the Charlie Brown TV soundtracks). He pioneered world jazz fusion and electro-acoustic percussion during the 60's hippie era, established the music department at the Naropa Institute in Boulder in '76, and has had a continuous teaching career since then in Boulder, Seattle, Halifax and Berlin. In the early '80s he performed and recorded in a trio with Ralph Towner and Gary Peacock for ECM. He has recorded as a leader for Evidence, Intuition, ITM, Koch, Love Slave and other labels, and performed and recorded with longtime musical associates Mose Allison, Jay Clayton, Jane Ira Bloom, Glen Moore, Anthony Cox, Dave Friedman, and Jamie Saft, as well as projects with Bill Frisell, Robben Ford, Julian Priester, Charlie Haden, Kenny Garrett, and Buck 65. "Things are moving along for Jerry Granelli's epic drum record. Charles Austin, Jerry, and I just spent a few days in the studio mixing the tracks we recorded way back in April. Working with Jerry has been incredible -- I have never thought so hard about drums. Both Charles and I are learning so much. Jerry will be turning 70 just before the release of this record. In all those years of drumming, as far as I can tell, he's yet to release a solo record. I am so honoured that he agreed to do this on DIVORCE! And on vinyl! Eileen Joyce's standing as one of Halifax's beloved and durable voices of the east coast is undeniably assured. Born in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Eileen was inspired from a musical family. Her father and brother - both jazz drummers - played music all of the time. As a child, she would hear about her brother (now respected Canadian musician and conductor) playing in the bars. "I remember when I was four years old seeing my father on television. I thought it was so cool! That stuck with me!" Later, after singing as a soloist in school choirs, Joyce's musical thirst carried her in her teens to Toronto where she cultivated stage technique in top 40 bands and musical theatre. Her sound was woven out of a deep love of 'soul, jazz and r&b. Singer, songwriter, Eileen Joyce is well known as a vibrant entertainer and powerful vocalist in eastern Canada. Her honest, sensual and robust vocal style can be described to that of Etta James, and Dinah Washington with a touch of Janis Joplin. A vocal range from alto to soprano, this stylist sings from the heart with a passion for the blues. Eileen is no stranger to the hectic life of a professional musician. During the past eight years, Eileen Joyce has toured throughout Canada, and the western United States. As a producer she has created, founded and served as artistic director for the regionally based organization, The East Coast Blues Society, and published blues based articles in several Canadian music publications. Her annual concert series, Ladies in Blue, is in its fifth year in the region. WOODY WOODS ~ Born and raised in the inner city of Los Angeles, Woods is an author, and a self-taught composer, conductor, lyricist and pianist. Blessed with the opportunity to conduct Parade of the Chariots, from the movie, Ben Hur, during his final year in Junior High School, Woods became hooked on directing bands, choirs and orchestras. He also had one of his original arrangements performed by the school Jazz Band that year. Thus, the fire was lit, and there was no putting it out. Woods was originally a woodwind player specializing in tenor sax, flute and clarinet. He began to take the piano seriously when the pianist in his high school Jazz ensemble (The Jazz Executives) joined another band. Since the band could not play without a pianist, Woods starting playing the piano and never did get back to any of his woodwinds http://www.eileenjoyceband.com/ http://www.woodywoods.net/ ____________________________________________________________________ REUT REGEV & IGAL FONI ~ out-of-studio Interview Sunday, July 18th/2010) =[feature on-air presented: Monday July 19th/2010-DEOTS Radio] Born and raised in Israel, Trombonist, composer and bandleader Reut Regev started shaping her impressive reputation on the Jazz scene at a young age. At only five years old she was introduced to the piano, and then added the trombone to her repertoire at age thirteen. While in high school, she had the opportunity to play with some of Israel’s most creatively improvisational musicians, as well as perform at Israel’s top Jazz Festivals. Reut eventually decided to concentrate on her beloved trombone, and has proven to be a remarkably inspiring innovator. After serving in Israel’s army band as first Trombnonist and soloist, Reut made her way to NYC, joining her now husband, drummer Igal Foni. Reut has been living and creating music in NYC for over a decade, collaborating, recording and touring with some of the finest musicians in various fields, including Latin, Klezmer, Rock, Blues, Jazz, contemporary classical and improvised music. He performs frequently in important jazz cities such as New York and Berlin, and leads numerous tours each year around Europe, the US and his native Canada. Steve Smith of Time Out New York has referred to Peter as “a compelling melodist with a fiery outward-bound streak and a penchant for layering opposed rhythms in quirky, compelling ways..." and in a review of 2008’s Hufflignon, Wilbur MacKenzie (All About Jazz NY) said that “Van Huffel’s playing… is richly nuanced, with melody and texture seamlessly integrated to create colorful and evocative statements.” ~~~ LIVE-IN-STUDIO with Host Lamont on Monday July 12th / 2010 show ~~~ Peter Van Huffel - saxophones http://www.petervanhuffel.com/ Jesse Stacken - piano http://www.jessestacken.com/ Miles Perkin - bass http://www.milesperkin.com/ Samuel Rohrer - drums http://www.samuelrohroer.com/ ____________________________________________________________________ part of the DEOTS Radio Halifax Jazz Festival Interview Series 2010 ____________________________________________________________________ ALANNA McINTYRE Sommelier & KATHRYN HARDING Sommelier ~ Bishop's Cellar Wine appreciation / Education / Resources for Culinary Community and individuals. The program has run continuously since this time. Monday evenings has been the home of the show for more than 7 years now and as we emerge into a new year (2009) it will continue to hold its place within the Monday evening program roster. The show is characterized by modern and archival recordings, recorded materiel and live-to-air interviews and events. resources and music Media are from private collections - community archives and station gems (from the on-site CKDU record library). _____________________________________________________________________________________ * DEOTS Radio supports community initiatives - local music and events and accessible spoken-resource media ~ locally and internationally ___ * Cultural Events and Showcasing of Maritime ~ Canadian & International media and talent is also of interest to the program. DEOTS Radio is a consistent contributor and sponsor of several Annual Jazz & Blues festivals in Atlantic Canada. _____________________________________________________________________________________ DARK END OF THE STREET (DEOTS) - Is assuredly one of the Maritimes longest-running FM Radio Shows ~ This unique "Eveningesque" Radio program, has been airing each week on CKDU since approximately 1986. It has been a main-stay within the stations programming roster and historically has focused on presenting Jazz & Blues music (both early and modern). As well, this show features Interviews and Spoken Word Programming. The term “World Music” could also be applied to the variety of groups and artists that this program showcases every week/month of the year. _____________________________________________________________________________________ PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: Dark End of the Street is the longest running Jazz & Blues show on CKDU FM. This weekly specialty show is currently emphasizing a predominantly contemporary traditional Jazz focus; much of this is Canadian. The show consistently features a mix of music both traditional and modern. Lesser known musicians and artists are presented along with the occasional genre icon. *** IN-STUDIO: Many local and visiting Canadian musicians and groups are featured over the course of twelve months. When and where opportunity presents, the host will include live and recorded interviews corresponding to featured music themes. Local and visiting musicians and groups are encouraged to recognize this show as a place to showcase their compositions and musical collaborations (local and Canadian music within the Genera that this show focuses on). Inter-provincial and national submissions have been received and presented. _____________________________________________________________________________________ A FEW WORDS ABOUT PROGRAMMING & CONTENT: The show will most often feature music from the hosts’ personal music collection. The CKDU record and CD library provide further material for the show. New Releases are introduced as available via the show host & station's Music Director. My program makes concerted use of many locations within the HRM Public Library system archives as well for both the eclectic music and Spoken Word sources. The show frequently introduces (recorded/documented) literary material available through the many Halifax University libraries and associated Resource Centers. Listeners are strongly encouraged to support and patronize such valuable community access points, outlets and institutions. ~ Awareness of the stations provisional founding body, the CKDU FM Society, is also encouraged and fostered along with sister organizations like: NS PIRG. ~ Ongoing discovery & awarenes is fostered in terms of listeners exploring a plethera of sourced content and local availability of media resources; documentary and spoken word material especially. In addition, a variety of community based organizations and individuals are introduced from time-to-time; subject to representitives and broadcast-approved material / press-releases permitting. _____________________________________________________________________________________ Un-COMPLICATED TRADITIONS: The consistency and accessibility of this program has afforded many local and international musician & groups the opportunity to be featured on radio when they are performing in the area. Many times such direct and uncomplicated radio exposure is not available given the closed market of the existing commercial radio stations and pre-programmed formating so prevalent in our Radio Media Market. _____________________________________________________________________________________ SPOTLIGHTING: Local alternative venues and community efforts are also highlighted with features and PSA announcements. Local weather and journalistic highlights will also contribute to the weekly show content. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The DEOTS program alternatively reserves a small segment of the broadcast time for expanded thematic content and musical offerings – diversity, that can easily fall into the World music forum; and we must concede that, in many respects, it is all “world” music and information. ****************************************************************************************Who I'd like to meet:
