.. .. Freelance Whales found one another in late 2008, in Queens, amidst a strange amalgam of unfamiliar instruments, and precariously arranged pop songs. Using whatever musical gadgets they happened upon (mostly harmonium, banjo, glockenspiel, synthesizers, guitars, bass, drums, waterphone), the five members worked at crafting songs with interlocking rhythmic patterns, lush textural layering, and an engaged group-vocal energy. The result is their debut LP, weathervanes, whose songs work at evoking a sense of dislocation, or sensory disorientation. They invite the human spirit to exit the body, if only for brief moments. Freelance Whales can be spotted in the streets and humble venues of New York City, and in due time, elsewhere.

"Freelance Whales have managed to channel something eerie, dreamlike, and seemingly autonomous – the sum of the players being much more than each individual part" - Mark Steffen, HEAVEmedia

"Amazingly, Freelance Whales are even more arresting live than they are on record. They exhibit the exuberance of a young band that feels lucky to be sharing ideas with their audience" - Leo Maymind, Earfarm

"It just doesn’t feel like kids we grew up with should be this free, so we figure this five-piece has been transported from some alternate universe or simpler time when being gleeful was more important than anything else." - RCRD LBL

"It's awash with gentle, naive bliss, and if you're the type that likes to observe hooks blossoming with the pace of an actual flower opening, then you might have just found a new favourite band." - NME

Thank you, after over a year of trying to see you guys I finally got to see you at Terminal 5. Please come back and play a place with better acoustics, I mean you guys were great and obviously the most progressive band in the show. I thought that wired up you guts would lose a little but seen a lot of great promise there, I suggest starting a show acoustically for a few songs then going electric on the appropriate songs or the other way around. You remind me of Gentle Giant the way you change instruments and weave melody in certain ways but you have a very unique and wonderful sound that must be carefully developed. No offense on the bands you are touring with now but don't let them influence you too much. If you could tour with a band like Gomez or Michael Franti and SpeerHead, I believe they would be good influences and I think they would appreciate you too.
Please consider hitting places in Brooklyn like Jalopy or The Bell House and the like.
I really enjoyed the show and will definitely be seeing you guys over and over again
