* ALERT: LIST OF 75 DOG BREEDS *BANNED* IN THE U.S.- FIGHT BSL! YOUR DOG IS NEXT!Daily, hundreds of so-called "Pitbulls" are taken out of their homes and summarily EXECUTED for NO BEHAVIOURAL REASON.
ONCE AGAIN BAD OWNERS, THUGS and DRUG DEALERS are the CAUSE. In OHIO there is NOW a Proposed State Bill that demands they all BE KILLED..WIPED OUT... REGARDLESS if they did or did NOTHING WRONG. (HB 568)
I have NEWS for you folks..WILL YOUR DOG BE NEXT? READ THIS! WAKE UP !!
List Of 75 Banned Or Restricted Breeds - Is Your Dog On The List?
The Responsible Dog Owners Of The Western States (RDOWS) has just updated the list of breeds that have been banned or restricted in the U.S. May 22, 2007 -
http://dogpolitics.typepad.com/my_weblog/2007/05/list_of_banned_.htmlmore
All you dog lovers out there may just be in for a shock. BSL - or breed-specific legislation and breed discrimination- isn't just for pitbulls or Rottweilers anymore.
The RDOWS has tracked a list of 75 breeds of dogs that have been banned or restricted - yep - that's Seventy-five. That's 75!
Just who or what is behind this breed ban frenzy?
Is your dog on the list of banned or restricted breeds?
Here's the deal...............
Media Frenzy Equals Breed Bans
And just who is pouring gasoline onto the fire, whipping up the flames of pit bull hysteria? Who or what is driving the onslaught of anti-dog legislation?
Your local paper, TV or radio station is - by publishing, posting or airing innacurate reports than use inflammatory language ("vicious" Rottweiler, "marauding" pitbulls, etc.)
Across the country - and indeed around the world - cities, counties and local town councils are busy banning or restricting breeds instead of punishing irresponsible behavior.
Here's what is happening:
a.. Breed bans - an outright ban on owning a specific breed of dog
b.. Breed-specific sterilization - owners are forced to spay or neuter animal
c.. Breed-specific measures that include mandatory registration in a database similar to a sex offender database, forced microchipping, forced containment or signage
d.. Breed-specific insurance requirements - forces owners to obtain the unobtainable "vicious" breed insurance - in reality this forces owners to surrender dogs or move
e.. Weight or size restrictions - banning dogs over an arbitrarily determined weight or size - as in Fairfield, Iowa where all dogs over 100 lbs are banned (St. Bernard, Irish Wolfhound, Great Dane, etc.)
BTW - your insurance company is happily waiting in the background too - waiting to exclude coverage of your dog, waiting to drop your policy, or waiting to outrageously raise your rates.
List of 75 Banned or Restricted Dogs
This list of dogs that are NOT UNIFORMLY banned/restricted across the U.S. Individual states, cities, counties or towns all make LOCAL LAWS - and those laws differ according to individual communities.
So - without further ado, courtesy of the RDOWS, here is the list of 75 - count 'em - SEVENTY FIVE - banned or restricted breeds .....................

Puppy Mills
What is a puppy mill?
Puppy mills (also known as puppy farms) are large-scale dog breeding facilities that operate under substandard breeding conditions that provoke the development of chronic health problems, temperament issues, and hereditary defects..
While many people may be familiar with the term "puppy mill" few are aware of the true extent of the horrors associated with them. Puppy mills are facilities that mass-produce puppies for sale to individuals or for pet stores throughout the country as well as to emerging foreign markets. From back yard breeders to those selling via the Internet, thousands of puppy mills aren't even regulated or inspected by the USDA since they sell directly to the public..
At present a USDA license is required for anyone with four or more "intact bitches" who sells "wholesale" to brokers (dealers) or directly to pet stores. Whether they are born in a licensed facility or not, puppies face a dismal and uncertain fate at the hands of individuals who are motivated by greed. Some die while being transported to pet stores or shortly thereafter and others find themselves in the hands of irresponsible or abusive guardians..
Dogs used for breeding suffer an endless misery imprisoned in small cramped cages, often soiled with their own excrement, breeding litter after litter until they can no longer reproduce

Many of the operators of these puppy mills hold other jobs and utilize mass-production methods to produce what they and government regulators consider an agricultural commodity. In a typical puppy mill the dogs are fed in the morning and again in the evening. Cleaning, sanitation and general maintenance are addressed as time permits, usually during the weekend, if at all. Most of these facilities are in rural areas and are family operated to supplement a modest income..
In previous years USDA inspectors conducted at least one unannounced inspection per year at these facilities, however, federal authorities have recently adopted a "risk based" inspection program. Operators are given the opportunity to correct non-compliant items (technically, violations of federal law) that are disclosed during the inspection. If upon reinsertion the violation or "non-compliant item" is not corrected, enforcement action should be taken in an effort to improve conditions at the facility..
Inspection policies have deteriorated to such an extent that operators of these facilities can operate indefinitely with repeated disclosure of "non-compliant items." The emphasis has dramatically shifted from the "welfare" of the animals to commerce. A factor that no doubt has contributed to this phenomenon is the decline in traditional small family farms..
Although some of the larger breeders house thousands of dogs in their facilities the average puppy mill will house between 65 and 75 animals, most housed in hutch-style cages with wire floors. Fecal matter drops to the ground below and waste accumulates beneath the cage, providing a haven for flies and other vermin. Even with fairly prompt removal of waste the ground becomes permeated with stench because the urine cannot be raked away. Dogs housed in indoor facilities endure an equally deplorable existence with ammonia vapors and odors permeating poorly ventilated buildings..
Rodents, flies, and other pests plague the animals almost constantly. Solid surfaces are supposed to protect the legs of puppies; however, as they mature and scout out their surroundings feet and legs often fall through wire floors designed to allow fecal matter to fall through. The resulting injuries compound their misery. Their soft coats of fur become soiled with fecal matter that didn't drop through the cage adding insult to injury..
The unlicensed puppy mills generally sell puppies at six weeks of age while federal licensees are prohibited from selling puppies under eight weeks of age. In any case, the puppies are "harvested" and cleaned up for the trip to the broker or individual buyer..
They are bathed to clean up feces and odors they have accumulated during their brief lives in the puppy mill. Pus is wiped from their sad and scared eyes just before they are shoved into whatever is convenient, with any luck an approved shipping container. An uncertain and perhaps cruel future for these babies thanks to an industry oblivious to moral and social responsibility..
What you can do
• Please don't buy animals from pet shops or breeders (Unless you know the owner personally and know that he/she is taking very good care of the animals)
• Find a responsible breeder and visit their premise where the puppy is being raised and cared for
• Each puppy purchased from a pet store, a back yard breeder, or via the Internet serves an industry with no conscience
• Thousands of unwanted animals of all ages and breeds are euthanized at pounds and shelters every day
• Adopt rescued and sheltered animal companion to help break the cycle of suffering, misery, and death
Please help put an end to these cruel puppy mills and prevent any more innocent lives from being bred into this miserable fate. Animals deserve to be born into a loving and happy life with a family who will love them for their whole lives. No living creature deserves this cruel misery. Puppy mills profit from the pain and suffering of innocent animals..
Help shut down these puppy mills by not supporting or purchasing from pet shops who have been proven to do business with heartless puppy mills. If these puppy mills are no longer making money and profiting off the long-term suffering of these beautiful animals and the ignorance of naïve individuals, puppy mills will be forced to shut down their inhumane business. Help save these beautiful animals from this cruel “business” that is puppy mills..

Adopting from an Animal Shelter
Animal shelters are your best source when looking for a pet. Not only do they have a great selection of adult animals for adoption, but they also have kittens and puppies, even purebred animals. On average, purebreds account for about 25 to 30 percent of a shelter's dog population..>
Many pets at your local shelter are waiting for new homes because they were obtained by someone with unrealistic expectations of the time, effort, and money required to sustain a lifelong relationship with their pet. National figures indicate that about half of the animals in shelters must be euthanized for lack of homes. Animals at your local shelter are eager to find a new home and are just waiting for someone like you..
You can depend on responsible shelters to assess the animals' health and temperament in order to make the best adoption matches possible. When animals are relinquished by owners, the shelter staff makes every attempt to collect a thorough history of that pet. Then, while caring for animals, staff and volunteers try to learn as much as they can about these animals as well as those who come to the shelter as strays..
Do not be discouraged if, when you first visit the shelter, there are no animals of the breed or type you want. Shelters receive new animals every day. Your shelter may also have a waiting list and can call you when an animal matching your preference becomes available. Before choosing your pet, you can even speak with an adoption counselor about whether your choice of a particular type or breed will be best for you..
In an effort to make good matches between people and animals and to place pets in lifelong homes, many shelters provide adoption counseling and follow-up assistance, such as pet parenting and dog-training classes, medical services, and behavior counseling. Or they may be able to refer you to providers of these services..
Before adopting, be sure to look over an animal's medical history so you can make sure if the animal has gotten all of their required shots such as their rabies and parvovirus shots, and all of their other vaccination shots. Most animal adoption organizations such as SPCA and Humane Society are government-funded, and therefore, must provide all their animals who are up for adoption with their vaccination shots, including rabies and parvovirus shots. It is an animal shelter's responsible to make sure that all their animals are healthy and well-taken care of..
Another advantage is that shelter adoption fees are usually much less than an animal's purchase price at a pet store or breeder. And your new pet is more likely to be vaccinated, dewormed, and spayed or neutered. To locate your local animal shelter, check the Yellow Pages under "animal shelter," "animal control," or "humane society"..
The animals that you will find at any of these adoption facilities are just as beautiful and loving as any you will find in any pet store, and they really need our help. Many of these animals have been victims of neglect and abuse, and deserve a good home. Encourage your family, friends and community to adopt a sheltered animal who desperately deserve a second chance to finally know love. Please help these animals find a good home with a loving family..

BUY A DOG, YOU KILL A DOG!
20 to 30 million pets are killed in dog pounds every year in the United States-it costs each county anywhere from $500,000.00 to over a million to kill these animals-EVERY YEAR. San Bernadino, CA spent a whopping $5 million in one year killing dogs and cats.
How do they die? Often with gas or getting stabbed in the heart with a needle, both extremely PAINFUL and AGONIZING ways to die.MAKE ANIMALS MATTER TO YOUR GOVERNMENT

"WE CAN JUDGE THE HEART OF A MAN BY HIS TREATMENT OF ANIMALS"-Immanuel Kant,German Philosopher
We are forever faced with sites promoting hunting/dog fighting and videos of kids setting animals on fire for a laugh - so here is a good piece of advice - save it - and let's get these people caught - and off the web!
......
What You Can Do about Web Sites that Promote Animal Cruelty
The Humane Society of the United States frequently receives correspondence from individuals concerned about sites on the Internet that celebrate and encourage the exploitation of animals. In many cases, what appears to be illegal activity is actually protected under the law as free speech...
If you see a web site that promotes or glorifies animal cruelty or exploitation, take these steps:
1. Do not contact the person running the site. In many cases, creators of offensive web sites are encouraged by the negative attention they receive in response to their site. For this reason, we discourage people from e-mailing or otherwise contacting the individuals who run offensive web sites...
2. Contact the Internet Service Provider (ISP) hosting the site. In response to complaints they receive from concerned visitors, ISPs have in many cases removed sites because they determined that the sites' content violated the ISP's User's Agreement. Click here to find the ISP for a site that ends in .com, .net, or .org. Click here to find the ISP for a site in an international domain (such as .uk or .ch)...
3. Resist spreading the word. If you have concerns about a web site, contact your elected officials. Please do not contact friends and neighbors. Many well-intentioned individuals believe that the best course of action is to tell all of their friends and relatives about such web sites. Sometimes petitions against a site will be generated. Ultimately, such petitions or mass emails only increase the number of visitors to a web site, encouraging the site's creator...Music

What To Do If You Witness Animal Abuse
If you think that an animal is being abused or neglected, it is important that you do something about it. Your involvement may be the animal’s only hope..
Where to Start
First, find out which agency is responsible for investigating and enforcing the anti-cruelty laws in your state, county, or town. This may be a local humane society or SPCA (Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) or a taxpayer-funded animal shelter (animal control). In jurisdictions without a humane society or animal-management department, citizens can call upon the police or sheriff’s department to enforce the law..
If the animal victim is not in immediate need of rescue, check state and local animal-protection laws by visiting your local library or city hall or by conducting an online search. Print out a copy of any laws that you believe are being violated, and be ready to cite these laws to authorities. In most states, causing an animal “unnecessary suffering” is illegal. That term can include everything from beating an animal to depriving him or her of clean water, food, or shelter..
If the animal is in a life-threatening situation, call authorities immediately. Follow up with them in a timely manner to determine their findings and course of action. If they do not respond right away, call your local animal rescue organization such as SPCA..
What to Look For
Physical Observations
• Does the animal have access to food, water and shelter?
• Is his/her area clean?
• Does the animal have apparent injuries that have not been treated?
• Does the animal appear to be overly aggressive or timid?
• Does the animal appear to be neglected?
**Neglect is vaguely defined as failure to provide an animal with necessary food, water, shelter, rest, sanitation, ventilation, space, or medical attention
• Did you witness the owner physically abuse the animal?
Gathering Evidence
Once you have determined which law-enforcement agency to contact (and ensured that the animal is not in imminent danger), provide authorities with a short, concise, factual, written statement, detailing the key points of what you have observed and giving dates, locations, and approximate times. Timely fact-gathering is crucial—the more time that passes, the greater the risk that specifics will be forgotten, witnesses will move, evidence will disappear, injuries will heal, etc. If you can, take pictures and date them; photographic or videotaped evidence fortifies your case, and short, factual, written statements from other witnesses will back up your observations..
Documenting the incident with photographs and videotape can be very helpful in prosecution. If such cruelty is not witnessed directly but is suspected, animal control authorities should be notified. Reports of animal cruelty should be as detailed as possible. Dates, times and circumstances should be noted and related to animal control authorities, who should also be made aware of any physical evidence (photos, video, etc.)..
Always keep a record of everyone you contact (official or otherwise), the dates of the contacts, and the content and outcome of your discussions. Never pass on a letter, photograph, or any documentation without first creating a copy for your file. Make it crystal clear to authorities that you wish to pursue this case and are willing to lend your assistance if necessary, and be sure to follow up! If you stay involved, they’re more likely to do the same..
Law-enforcement officials should inspect the animal visually, and if possible, conduct a hands-on field exam (referred to as “palpating” the animal) in order to find injuries or an otherwise unhealthy physical condition that may be obscured by the victim’s fur. Officials will often be fooled by a dog who “acts happy, ” but manic or social behavior does not mean that the animal is safe; he or she may just be anxious to please or desperate for attention. A more thorough examination is necessary, and an injured or clearly endangered animal must not be left behind..
The crime scene should also be thoroughly inspected for any indication that abuse has occurred. Suspects and neighbors (potential witnesses) should be interviewed. If the investigator agrees that your complaint has merit, a warning may be issued, charges filed, a warrant served, and/or the animal(s) removed..
Pursuing Your Case
Persistence has saved countless animals from abusive people. If you are unable to get satisfaction from law-enforcement officers, go straight to their supervisors. If necessary, appeal to local government officials, such as the mayor, prosecutor, city council members, or county commissioners. A simple call to the media (TV and print) in your area can move mountains. News coverage often forces officials to act and can also scare the abuser into stopping the cruel behavior. News coverage may also inspire viewers who have seen similar acts to step forward and share their own accounts.

If you have personally witnessed an act of cruelty, you can go to your local magistrate or police commissioner and swear out a warrant to summon the abuser to court. Expert witnesses can be very helpful—a veterinarian, for example, can sign a statement that it is his or her “expert opinion” that a dog suffers if swung by a leash, deprived of food, etc. If you know a sympathetic veterinarian, seek his or her assistance, and let officials know that you have expert support..
Reporting Cruelty
A person reporting animal cruelty should ask for the name of the animal control officer and ask what action is planned. Follow up, and report any change observed in the animal's condition and situation. A person reporting animal cruelty need not be concerned with confidentiality. An investigating officer is not likely to identify the source of the complaint. Should the keeper of the animal be prosecuted, witnesses may be called to testify, but the immediate condition of the animal should outweigh concerns about having to testify months from now. You may be that animal’s only hope of survival.

As frightening it may be to think about testifying in court, an innocent animal’s life is at stake. Please think of that animal and remember that he/she cannot speak for themselves so they need you to be their voice and rescue them from this cruelty. These animals are worth saving..

Taking care of rescue dogs Is something I do best.
I know because I've done it, And I've surely passed the test.
The dogs I've bathed, the food I've fed, The vacuuming I've done, And all to watch a frightened soul Sit dreaming in the sun.
My own dogs I've neglected, But I tell them everyday That I love and cherish each of them Though a new dog's come to stay.
I know they understand this, For in their eyes I see The love that I have given them Come shining back at me.
Some people think I'm crazy, Some others think I'm great. But very few can understand What really is at stake.
If I can love and help a dog To find a better way, My own life is much richer, I look forward to each day.
So now you know my secret, It's there for all to see, The love I give, the life I save,
...I do it all for me.

A business which leaves behind a trail of corpses: around the world every year, over 50 million wild animals – mink, foxes, racoon dogs, racoons and many other types of fur-bearing animal – are reared under shocking conditions and killed so their fur can be used in the fashion industry........
Before they die the animals are condemned to suffer in tiny cages at fur farms, where a natural life is impossible. This results in severe behaviour disorders and even self-mutilation. A painful death awaits the animals – they are gassed, poisoned or killed using electric shocks, which is cynically referred to in the trade as “fur harvesting”..
So far, only a few countries have banned fur farms (eg Great Britain and Austria) or introduced guidelines which will phase out the keeping of animals for fur in the next few years (eg Switzerland)..However, on a global scale, fur-bearing animals are given no or only insufficient protection..
Rearing and “harvesting” are on the rise in places where animal protection is not a priority – a booming and deadly business..
..The situation in China..
China has an unenviable record when it comes to fur – it has become the world market leader in recent years, despite not having a tradition of keeping animals for fur..
..China – the world leader..
Today, one in three mink furs comes from China. Conditions are ideal for breeders – Chinese workers are cheap, and animal and environmental protection regulations non-existent, which gives the Chinese fur industry a free hand to carry on operating at the expense of animals, the environment and people..
China is also an up-and-coming fur trading location and the world’s largest fur processor. This causes further problems, as tanning and dying the furs is a huge burden on the environment..
..A painful death..
The latest research in China has shown that fur-bearing animals are kept in minute wire cages. In the worst cases, Chinese mink cages are only a quarter of the size of those normally used in Europe, which are too small anyway – 70 x 30 centimetres, or roughly the size of a shoebox. Racoon dogs are also left to vegetate in confined spaces, without burrows into which they can retreat..
The tight conditions lead to serious behaviour disorders – the animals are injured by the sharp wire mesh and suffer great pain, and their drinking water freezes in the sub-zero temperatures. Slaughtering is unimaginably barbaric – industry employees have revealed that the animals are simply grabbed by the tail and their heads beaten on the ground. They are often only left stunned and then skinned alive..
Mink, foxes and racoon dogs are mainly kept in these dreadful conditions at Chinese fur farms. As an industry insider predicted, the 2007 “harvest” haas been amount to at least 10-15 million mink furs, or more than one-third of the global total, and a minimum of four million fox furs. Chinchillas, rabbits and cats are also killed for their fur..
What you can do
Do not buy any furs or other items with real fur!
If you know people who wear fur, talk to them about the fur industry’s cruelty to animals!
Complain to stores which still sell fur products!

Dog meat traders arrested in Philippines
A dog carries a banner protesting cruelty to animals in the Philippines
BAGUIO, Philippines (AFP) — Six people illegally selling dog meat have been arrested and are facing up to four years jail in a fresh crackdown in the northern Philippines, officials said Monday.
Animal rights activists from the London-based Animal Kingdom Foundation (AKF) accompanied police as they raided a public market near the northern mountain city of Baguio on Sunday.
Police arrested six traders and confiscated around 260 kilos (570 pounds) of dog meat.
The arrests were the first since a new law imposing stricter penalties for selling dog meat took effect on Sunday.
AKF researcher Brando Gegway said at least a dozen restaurants in Baguio alone openly advertise dog meat on their menu.
The raids are "all about about protecting the people's health due to the high risk of rabies" from eating dog meat," he told reporters.
But dog meat however is a tradition in many northern Philippine tribal cultures, and while the government has tried to stop the practice, it has persisted over the years.*..Animal Research Labs List..

we ALWAYS see animal abuse online and people think reporting the person's profile to "myspace" is actually helping when in reality, you are erasing the evidence.
TIPS FOR REPORTING INTERNET ANIMAL ABUSE
..
I dedicate 60+ hours weekly to help save animals, not one dime will pass through my hands. I am rewarded in much better ways. Anything that needs to be done for the welfare of animals is in my field. rescues, transports, rallies, investigations, justice, anything. contact me if the need arises, and I will do my best to help you out, or I can at least help direct you to some one who can help you.
I WANT TO GIVE THE PUBLIC THE "BURDEN OF TRUTH" Hoping the majority will act upon their clean conscious AND DO SOMETHING!!!
Thankyou.
Please no politicals, perverts,BREEDERS, PUPPY MILLS, or spammers! I will check out all my invites personally.I do not accept every invite.
The sole job of this page is to help bring awareness to our on-going crisis , and help shuffle pets from kill shelters to for ever homes. If you are a supporter of puppy mills, don't bother with this page!
YOU ARE NOT WELCOME!
All persons, names, and corporations appearing for the sole purpose of allowing members of the public to VOICE their concerns and carryout protests in a LEGAL manner.
I will admit to you now, whenever I come across something educational and/or informative, I may post it as a blog to spread the information of our crisis to the greater public. I will give credit where credit is due, and make sure I post a link to the auther.
Advocate for Saving Dogs will take NO responsibility for actions and activities carried out by the VEIWERS of this page.
I am an animal rights advocate. I am not associated with any one with the exception of myself. I am a radicle only in the sense because I will not tolerate any form of domesticated animal abuse. I do not condone any unlawfull activity, If I witness any, I will be the animals' advocate and seek justice from you, to the full extent of our governmental law. I want to make it a priveledge, and not a right to own a pet. I can never say that enough.
I try to help rescue abandoned, abused, homeless animals, in the United states. I want to help expand shelters' capacities .I also help shelters with thier needs. I promote the humane treatment of all animals.
I take great pride in thinking "out-side of the box". We have alot of great people helping in our furry community, but, I realize we need to try some different ideas...What we as a community are doing now is great, it's more than great, but it's not working on the level every one would like to see it, what is going on now is not sufficent enough, and Advocate for saving dogs wants to help lower the kill-rate in the U.S., and promote more humane methods of euthenization also...
I have seen many cases of abused and neglected animals. What people need to realize is that animals have feelings too and they are all worth saving. They are capable of unconditional love and loyalty. I try to save lives one dog at a time. I am against puppy mills and pet shops! There are many great pets located at your local animal shelter that desperately need a good home. Save a life - adopt from a shelter or rescue and please spay or neuter.
BUT ITS JUST A DOG...........
To anyone who says, "It's just a dog:"
You are the reason rescues exist, why thousands of dogs die everyday in
shelters, homeless and unwanted.
You are the backyard breeder or puppy miller, who looks at a dog and
sees dollar signs, who cares nothing for the inevitable decline in the
dog's health after having litter upon litter of puppies, nor for the
countless dogs who will now die in shelters because the puppies you
breed have taken up their homes.
You are the supporter of these backyard breeders and puppy mills,
willing to pay $500 or more for a puppy rather than $90 for a rescued
dog, because having a pedigree to show off to friends is more important
than saving the life of a true and loyal companion.
You are the one who trains dogs to fight, whether for sport or
protection, thus abusing your dog and bringing the call for the
extermination of an entire breed of perfectly wonderful dogs.
You are the one who thinks nothing of putting your dog to sleep because
it doesn't go with the furniture, or it urinates on the carpet, while at
the same time balking at the thought of spanking an unruly child.
You are the one who dumps your dog at the shelter when you move, because
you're too lazy to find pet-friendly housing.
You are the one who keeps your dog tied up outside, only bothering to
provide the occasional bowls of food and water and possibly a tree for
shade, because after all, it is just a dog, right?
To the 90 year old woman in the nursing home, abandoned by her family,
yearning for companionship, stroking the fur of a new friend with the
words "Therapy Dog" on its side, it's not just a dog.
To the young child who has become literate by reading aloud to a dog in
the classroom, it's not just a dog.
To the person with skin cancer who had it detected by a dog when the
doctors couldn't, it's not just a dog.
To the blind man who now can see through his companion, it's not just a
dog.
To anyone who has been in bed, sick with the flu, and has felt the
warmth of that cold nose as he curls up between your legs to give you
comfort, it's not just a dog.
To anyone who comes home from a hard day of work to be greeted by
someone who's so happy to see you they can't stop wiggling, it's not
just a dog.
To anyone who has cried at Old Yeller, because they know what it's like
to lose their best friend, to know that their friend is suffering and
though it may be hard, the best thing to do is to help them go
peacefully, it's not just a dog.
When you say, "It's just a dog," you really mean, "Why should I care
about it? Dogs aren't important. They're useless.
..
To everyone who says, "It's just a dog," I just have this to say to you:
You're just a human.

How do we keep animals from being euthanized?
BY KEEPING THEM OUT OF THE SHELTERS!!!!!! The shelters are the LAST place the animals should be in. While some shelters are “no-kill,” those shelters get full and animals will be transferred to another shelter (unless sponsored or adopted by then) and that shelter may or may not be high kill. So we need to keep our pets out of the shelters by being more responsible and knowing how to keep those animals alive and saved from animal shelters. Here’s how.
Here is a link to check out shelters and kill statistics per state!!
If you have a pregnant animal, and it GOT pregnant in your custody, that makes you a breeder. I don't care if it was an accident or not. Accidental breeders are just the same as those who do it for money.

Pets 101: How do I find out what local laws and ordinances apply to my pets?
Here's a step by step guide to reporting animal cruelty. Thanks to Metroplex Animal Coalition for the information.
Step 1. Assess what you are dealing with. There are some minimum standards that all animal owners should need to meet:
Fresh food and water
Shelter from the elements
A yard free of feces and urine, or at least space to be free of these.
Tethering may or may not be illegal in your community -
this article
will tell you how to find out.
Step 2. Make sure you have adequate information about the exact nature of the complaint. Be prepared to provide:
The exact address of the offense. In some non-residential areas a nearby intersection may suffice. In an apartment complex, be prepared to provide the apartment number.
Name of the owner, if known
Number of animals present
Description of the animals
Your contact information. Many times you can report cruelty anonymously, but the authorities still need your contact information in case they have a question about what you saw.
Step 3. Who to contact:
Start with your city's Animal Service Division - this may be reached by calling 311 within the city or by calling 411 information, or by referencing the city's Web site for that information.
The Office of the City Attorney
The Office of the Mayor
Your city council representative
Please note - you cannot stop by simply reporting it. You MUST FOLLOW-UP to determine what action was taken. At the same time, you should also contact the SPCA of Texas since if the offense is outside the city of Dallas, they can respond. You can report cruelty on line at www.spca.org or call 214-742-SPCA.
If all else fails, the last option to try is to report the case to the media. Even if you do not have contacts in the media, all TV and radio stations have links or forms on their Web sites to report breaking news or news items. Many reporters now accept e-mails through the station's Web sites.
Please report cruelty when you see it. The animals depend on you.

**FACTS ON GASSING**
Documentation shows that animals can struggle and wail for up to ten minutes before death in gas chambers. Some bite themselves and each other in panic, beat their heads against the chamber walls, choke and vomit while being forced to inhale carbon monoxide. Groups of animals are often gassed together. Carbon monoxide is not effective for baby animals, for very old, sick or pregnant animals, since they may not inhale enough gas to die. Even healthy adult animals have survived the first gassing. Shelter employees admit to gassing the same animals up to three times.

Gas Chamber Bans Proposed in Southern States
March 3, 2009..
As hard as it is to believe, animal shelters in some states—including Georgia and North Carolina—continue to kill unwanted animals in gas chambers, with all the accompanying horror that such an image conjures. Fortunately, legislation has been introduced in both states to ban these horrendous contraptions for good.
It can take anywhere from 20 to 45 minutes for animals to die in gas chambers. Oftentimes, they bark, meow, howl, whine, gasp for breath, fight to claw their way out of the chamber, vomit, convulse, and/or urinate and defecate in terror. Animals sometimes have to be gassed repeatedly before they die. Some animals—like Davie, the North Carolina bill's namesake—have been known to "wake up" later after being put in a freezer or dumped at a landfill.
To get a better idea of the horror that these animals go through, just look at these pictures of some of the gas chambers that are currently being used:

Linda Cordry, an animal control officer in Liberty County, Ga., has written in support of Georgia's bill. "I know from firsthand experience that the gas chamber is a barbaric piece of equipment," she says. "I can say without qualification that being killed in a gas chamber is terrifying for the animals and heartbreaking for the humans involved. It is the ultimate nightmare, and no horror film could even come close to depicting the experience."
Both Georgia's and North Carolina's laws would require that animal shelters use only intravenous injections of sodium pentobarbital to euthanize animals. This is key because, in addition to using gas chambers, some animal shelters in rural areas still shoot unwanted animals. No, I'm not making that up. I wish I were.
If you live in North Carolina, click here to find your representative so that you can speak up about this legislation. Time is of the essence—the Georgia bill will be killed if a Senate version isn't introduced by March 12, so if you live there, click here to find your representative's contact info. If you don't live in North Carolina or Georgia, you can leave a comment below in support of these new bills.

Spay and Neuter Certificate Information
Although there are an estimated 100 million cats and dogs kept by responsible and caring people in the United States, there is also a tragic number of these companion animals who suffer horrid cruelties associated with abandonment.
Animal shelters in the U.S. kill about 5.1 million such abandoned pets each year. And uncounted millions more suffer sickness, exposure, starvation and death on the streets of the nation’s cities and towns, and in the fields and forests of the countryside.
From its beginning in 1957, FoA has assumed a leadership role in advocating low-cost spaying and altering as the most effective means of preventing the births of unwanted dogs and cats, and their subsequent abandonment, suffering and mass killing. For more than four decades, we have operated the only nationwide breeding control program in the United States facilitating more than 2 million spay/neuter procedures.
Pet owners may purchase a certificate from Friends of Animals that can be used for a routine spay or neuter surgery at any of FoA’s participating veterinary hospitals.
Spaying and Neutering Certificates may be purchased on-line. Or to order by mail call 1-800-321-PETS (1-800-321-7387) and request an application
The recommended age for spay/neutering is 2-6 months of age.
Female animals should be spayed before their first heat (estrus cycle). They do not need to have a litter before spaying.
FoA certificates are not valid for a cat if the cat is to be declawed.
Cats need their claws for protection and for their physical and mental well-being. Declawing is painful, cruel and psychologically damaging.

1. If you do not want your pet any longer or you cannot afford to take care of him or have no room… do not dump him out of the streets! Take some responsibilities and do the right things. Post a bulletin on myspace, an ad in the newspapers or any way you can to get the word out that an animal needs a home. You can just foster or sponsor a pet temporarily before they find a permanent home. A real home with loving owners is where animals deserve to be in… not an animal shelter. Animal shelters officers drive around and watches for roaming animals then picks them up and takes them back to their local shelters for either euthanasia or transport to another shelter that could be where they are put to sleep. A lot of shelters cannot make enough room so they have to kill the animals to make room! If you know someone who is looking to take in an animal, let them know.
Do not dump them out in the streets for animal control to pick up!
2. STOP BREEDING!!!!!!!!! Start spaying/neutering your pets! If you cannot afford to do this or even take an animal to the vet, there are ways to get help on paying for your vet bills or you may take the animal to someone who is willing to pay and can afford the bills. You can call your local animal control and ask for some advice. Try looking into those for more.
Need Help Paying Vet Bills?
What you can do if you are having trouble affording veterinary care
3. Get your pets tattooed or microchipped.
4. Cats and dogs can live up to around 18-20 years. Humans live a lot longer (unless you get sick or have an accident) up to about 70-90 years. So you’re going to be around for a long time as you would expect, longer than your cats and dogs will. You have nothing to worry about because you’ll always be around as long as your pets live, right? WRONG!!!! There are no guarantees how long your pets will live or how long you will live! So say an owner passes away then the pet is left alone with no one to care for him. Now what? Sometimes people will take the pets and take them to the animal shelters or find someone else to take care of them but most likely, they’ll be placed in the animal shelter until someone comes by and bring them home but what if that doesn’t happen? You need a plan! If you are going to take care of a pet, you have to think things through such as how you will care for them, how you can afford vetting bills and if you can and also what happens if there’s no one there to take care of them in case something happens to you.
Here’s a Frequently Asked Questions page to help you out
5. Get your pets tagged! I know cats don’t like collars but you will need them, believe me! If your pet wanders off and gets lost and ends up being picked up by the animal control, the officers from the shelter can look at the tag and look at the information such as the vet’s phone numbers. They will call the vet and give them the information then the vet will pull up information about the pet and find its owner then call the owner to have them pick up the pet. If the pet is indoors, you should still get him tagged or licensed in case he gets loose and gets out of the house and wanders off. If you are moving, provide a temporary tag for him with the pet’s name, your name, phone number you can be reached at and home address. Make sure the information is up to date so the shelters have an easier time finding the pet’s owner.

Pets 101: Questions to Ask a Shelter
Before You Adopt a Pet
July 15, 10:22 AM
Sharon Seltzer
Pet Rescue Examiner.jpg)
Gypsy is looking for her perfect match in a new family.
Did you know that all animal shelters or animal rescue organizations are not alike? On one end of the spectrum there are shelters that scrutinize adoptive families and provide medical care, humane housing and socialization for the animals in their care.
On the opposite end of the scale there are less conscientious groups who turnover large numbers of cats and dogs and never give consideration to the match between the pet and its new human guardian.
It’s important for adoptive families to be well-matched with their new pet, especially in the areas of: personality, energy level, size and age. Sending a homeless cat or dog to a family where they are not well suited for each other creates a miserable situation for both the animal and humans. This scenario often ends with the pet being returned to the shelter, which is upsetting for everyone involved. There is nothing sadder than seeing an exuberant little puppy being returned because his new owners weren’t prepared to live with a high energy dog.
Here is a list of questions to ask an animal shelter before adopting a new pet:
* Ask to see the living conditions of the pets to determine if they are clean, humane and safe.
* Ask if the animals have been examined by a veterinarian.
* Has the shelter has disclosed any health problems or special needs the pet requires?
* Make sure the cats and dogs have been vaccinated.
* Be sure the pets have been spayed or neutered. Some groups hand out vouchers, so new owners can take pets to be “fixed” at a later date. Too many kittens and puppies have been born because an owner intended to use a spay/neuter voucher, but never followed through.
* Ask if the animals have been evaluated for temperament issues. This is very important in your selection process. If you want to adopt a dog that will play with your children, it is good to know ahead of time which dogs like kids.
* Inquire if the cats and dogs have been socialized or trained. Some shelters teach basic obedience commands, walking on a leash and even housetraining.
* Ask if the shelter offers education and support if you have any behavior problems.
* Will they allow you to return the cat or dog if the adoption does not work out?
Here are questions the animal shelter should ask you:
* Where will the pet stay during the day and at night?
* How many hours a day will the cat or dog stay home alone?
* What type of prior experience do you have raising an animal?
* If you rent, do they want to see a letter from your landlord that permits pets and states any size or weight limitations?
* Has the organization discussed the annual cost to own a cat or dog?
* Do they provide a space where you can get to know the animal?
* Do they suggest that you bring other pets to the adoption center for a “meet and greet” with the new pet? You may have fallen in love with an adorable little kitten, but your dog at home may not feel the same way.
Reputable shelters who are concerned about the placement of their pets should be happy to answer these questions. However, if you find an organization that is hasty in adopting a pet, or is unable to give reasonable answers to these questions, walk away and report them to Animal Control.
Homeless pets deserve to receive first-rate care and the best opportunity possible to find the perfect family so the bond they create with their new guardians will last a lifetime.
The False Myths about Shelter Pets
There are many misconceptions about the quality of animals found in rescue shelters. The stigma that shelter pets have been stuck with for many years is that they are "damaged goods". This is not true and every sheltered animal deserves a second chance at a better life..
Myth: Shelter pets are obviously not good pets, or else their original owners wouldn't have gotten rid of them
If the main reason why a pet gets brought to rescue shelters was because they were a *bad* pet, there would be thousands of empty shelters across the country. Animals are brought to shelters for a large variety of reasons, some of which are...
• Their owners have passed away
• The animal's owners were abusive to the animal, so the authorities have removed the pet from the harmful environment
• The animal’s irresponsible owners abandoned them or put them in the shelter themselves because they could not handle the responsibility of taking care of an animal..
• An animal was purchased or adopted by someone who did not take into consideration all of the responsibility that caring for that pet would entail. A good example of this would be someone who adopts a pet in an apartment complex that does not allow animals and then is subsequently forced to get rid of the pet..
Myth: Animals from abusive homes will never be good pets because they have been mistreated for so long
Most animals coming from abusive homes will typically make a full emotional recovery - with proper care and attention. In fact, many of them are so grateful to be rescued from their previous situation, they end up being more devoted and loyal than animals coming from non-abusive homes..
Myth: You never know what you're getting with shelter pets
Although it’s true that the medical history and temperament of an animal adopted from a rescue shelter are not always able to be tracked down, it’s really no different than an animal you might get from a pet store, even if you are buying a pedigree..
Myth: All animals in rescue shelters are sickly or unhealthy
Once again, it certainly IS possible that a pet adopted from a rescue shelter may have medical problems, however the majority of the animals that are adopted from shelters are perfectly healthy, and just need a good home. If anything, you're more likely to get an h
Who I'd like to meet:
Animal foster parents

Foster Parents provide temporary care for kittens, puppies, cats and dogs in their greater-Seattle area homes. Some animals only need a home for two weeks, others may need three months. By offering your time, energy, and home to an animal in need, you prepare the animal for adoption into a permanent, loving home. Animal shelters and humane rescue organizations are always looking for foster homes, especially throughout the busy spring and summer seasons. The more Foster Parents they have, the more lives we will be able to save..
Three of the most common reasons for animals to be selected for foster care are:
• Cats or dogs who are nursing their litter of kittens or puppies and need to raise them in a home environment where they can all receive proper socialization
• Cats and the occasional dogs that are being treated for an illness such as upper respiratory infection or kennel cough and require daily medications and TLC
Animal shelters provide veterinary care and medicine for foster animals and lots of support to foster care volunteers. Foster care volunteers provide time, shelter, and lots of love..
How foster care works
• Animal shelters receive an animal that is not ready to be put up for adoption. Animal shelters frequently receive very young animals that are not ready for adoption and needing immediate foster care..
• Foster homes are contacted. If you are called to foster an animal and cannot do it for any reason, we will find another foster home and call you the next time. It's always okay to say you are not available..
• The animal goes to the foster home until ready for adoption. You may need to bring the animal to a shelter to get checked periodically by the shelter’s veterinarian or to receive any necessary vaccines or treatments..
• The animal is returned to the animal shelter for adoption. Animals coming out of foster care are placed up for adoption right away..

If you are interested in becoming a foster parent for a sheltered animal, please call your local animal shelter and/or humane rescue organization such as SPCA and ask them about becoming a foster parent for an animal..
Becoming an animal foster parent does give sheltered animals a chance to recover and learn to love again while waiting for a permanent and loving family to adopt them. It will also help make more room in shelters for new incoming animals and decrease the number of animals that are euthanized to make more room. You will be saving more lives by becoming an animal foster parent..
“Children taught to extend justice, kindness, and mercy to animals become more just, kind and considerate in their relations with each other.
Character training along these lines will result in men and women of broader sympathies, more humane, more law-abiding – in every respect more valuable citizens

When you teach a child to be kind to animals, you help pave the way to a brighter future for all living beings. Animals benefit because the next generation has learned to treat them with respect and compassion, reducing instances of animal cruelty. Children benefit because learning about compassion and empathy early in life builds moral character, reduces violence, and builds a sense of empowerment and responsibility.
And society as a whole benefits when its members are more caring towards each other and the animals who live among us
Unfortunately, not all children are taught to be kind to animals.
This gap may lead them to tease animals or otherwise disregard their feelings; in the worst cases, it can lead to acts of animal cruelty

Animal cruelty is a heinous act punishable by law in every state, but in recent years, there has been increasing recognition of the link between animal cruelty and violence to other humans as well.
For instance, it's often the case that children who commit animal cruelty have witnessed or been victims of abuse themselves: In roughly one-third of families suffering from domestic abuse, at least one child has hurt or killed a pet, according to two separate studies cited by the Humane Society of the United States
Sadly, violence begets more violence, and those who start off abusing animals often end up abusing people too. People who deliberately abuse animals are five times more likely to commit violent crimes against people, four times more likely to commit property crimes, and three times more likely to have a record for drug abuse or disorderly conduct than those who don't, according to a study by American Humane.
In fact, the FBI reportedly even uses reports of animal cruelty to assess the potential threat posed by suspected and known violent criminals
One solution to ending the violence is humane education, which has recently begun to be widely recognized as an essential part of childhood education.
By reaching children early in life, and focusing on instilling respect and compassion for animals, the goal is to stop potential abusers before they start
So far, the results are encouraging: 98 percent of teachers participating in the Humane Society's humane education program say that it has increased their students' concern about animal welfare. And there are other humane education programs as well. But even if you're not a teacher, there are many things you can do to help teach children to be kind to animals.
The lessons they learn will last a lifetime

~Teach by example! Children learn much of what they know by watching those around them, so one of the best ways to teach children is by showing them that you care about animals. Take good care of your pets, including spaying and neutering them; involve children in building bird houses or walking shelter dogs.
Speak out when you see animals being mistreated, and encourage children to do the same
~Volunteer to visit a classroom, club or other group of children and talk to kids about kindness to animals.
Many local animal shelters and humane societies already have programs in place for humane education, so it's a good idea to start by talking to them first

Animal Cruelty - The Cruel Reality Behind Greyhound Racing
Please be advised that this video does contain graphic images of the horrific reality behind greyhound racing. Despite what most ignorant people believe, greyhound racing is animal cruelty. Many greyhounds have been beaten, starved, neglected, tortured and murdered all in the name of this “sport”. These beautiful and angelic dogs have been through hell and worse, the truth about their abuse is being questioned and denied. Greyhound racing is a horrific fate that these dogs are forced to endure. No animal deserves to suffer from this torture and ultimate death sentence that is called “entertainment.” These beautiful and innocent dogs deserve a good home with a family who will love them for their entire life and never force them to endure such pain and suffering for profit or amusement. Please help stop this cruelty from continuing and help ban animal racing from ever destroying another innocent life..
Please spread awareness and education throughout your community about the truth and reality of greyhound racing. Unfortunately, people do not believe that animal racing industries are guilty of any animal cruelty and others simply refuse to believe it. No matter what anyone believes, the truth of the matter is that these dogs are suffering and being killed as a result of this cruel and brutal “sport” that is greyhound racing. Please boycott any animal racing that is occurring in your area and contact your state officials to urge them to ban all types of animal racing because it is animal cruelty and these animals deserve a better life than this hell. These animals deserve a happy and healthy life. These animals deserve rights..

Each year, 42,000 dogs are sold to veterinary schools and research labs by Class B dealers, who are required by federal law to buy the animals from pounds, shelters and small breeders and to treat them humanely. -Stop Huntington Animal Cruelty
SHAC is a global campaign, with active groups in over 20 countries and on every continent - all united with one aim - to close down Huntingdon Life Sciences (HLS), Europe's largest and most exposed animal testing laboratory.
Who are Huntingdon Life Sciences?
HLS are a contract animal testing laboratory, with labs in the UK and the USA. At any one time they have about 70,000 animals on site, from mice to monkeys, and dogs to deer. These animals are destined to suffer and die in cruel, useless experiments. No animal leaves HLS alive. 500 animals die every day inside this hell-hole.
HLS will test anything for anybody. They carry out experiments which involve poisoning animals with household products, pesticides, drugs, herbicides, food colourings and additives, sweeteners and genetically modified organisms.
HLS have been infiltrated and exposed SEVEN separate times. Each time horrific evidence of animal abuse and staff incompetence has been uncovered, including workers punching beagle puppies in the face, monkeys being cut open while they're still alive and frozen pig hearts being stitched into wild caught baboons.
