About me:
Special Olympics Great Britain (SOGB) is the major provider of sporting opportunities for people with a learning disability and provides equality of opportunity for all athletes regardless of ability or degree of disability.
More than 4,000 people will head to Leicester to be part of the games next year, which are set to feature around 21 sports in a wide range of sporting venues.
The opening ceremony for the games will take place at the Walkers Stadium on July 25th, 2009.
Leicester is the only city in the country to have hosted the games twice. The 2009 games will take place on what will be the 20th anniversary of the National Summer Games in Leicester. All of the competing athletes will be based at Leicester University’s new halls of residence in Oadby.
Special Olympics GB currently serves over 8,000 athletes who take part in year-round sports training and competition programmes.
Special Olympics Great Britain National Summer Games are held every four years. The last National Summer Games were held in Glasgow in 2005.
The Leicester Games Office will be officially open for business in January 2008. In the meantime, anyone wanting more details about the 2009 Special Olympics can ring Steve Humphries on (0116) 238 5000.

OLYMPIC CYCLING MEDALLIST OFFERS SOL ATHLETES TOP 10 TIPS
Former GB track rider Bryan Steel is passing on training tips to athletes ahead of the National Summer Games, with two more to be unveiled each week, exclusively on the SOL social networking sites.
06.02.09 - this week, we see the first two tips from Bryan:
1. Always make sure you drink thoughout a session and not finish the session dehydrated.
2. Before you start a session, make sure your equipment is working properly to make sure it does not let you down.
12.02.09 - two more tips:
3. Before you start a session, make sure you have clear, achievable goals.
4. If you are training with others try to have some slightly better than your self so they push you to your limits.
18.02.09 - the latest two tips from Bryan Steel:
5. Don't go into a session cold and always make sure you warm-down (or you'll pay for it the next day!)
6. Always try to dress for the right weather conditions. If are in the wrong clothing you may have to cut the session short or even get sick.
27.02.09 - 2 more from Bryan
7. If you have a planned time for a session try to get there earlier rather than late. You will not get the best from the session if you start it stressed.
8. If you are struggling with the session and not achieving your goal then don't keep going - instead, change the session or cut it short.
Keep checking back for more top athletic advice!
