About me:
I am a disgrace to my country, or so I have been told, because I oppose the war in Iraq and have said so from the very beginning, which, of course, makes me one of tens of millions of Americans of like mind. I have been spat upon, which I find incredibly ironic since there are very few stories reported about protestors being degraded in such a manner, a lit cigarette was thrown into my left eye and my home address and phone number were placed on a local right wing web site. All because I simply said what I thought about an issue as important as war. Still, despite these regrettable experiences, these last years have been ones in which I have learned a great deal about America. I think I have witnessed both the best and the worst my country has to offer. We are at war unnecessarily, perhaps even illegally, and so many people have suffered as a result. The government lies to its people each and every day about nearly everything it does-both foreign and domestic. And torture is now discussed as acceptable behavior-in some cirlces at least. On the other hand, there is so much activity brewing all over the country. People are taking matters into their own hands by doing what they feel needs to be done in order to make a positive difference. Cindy Sheehan comes to mind immediatley, but ordinary Americans of all types are energized and willing to do the right thing-as they see it-no matter the consequences. It is inspiring to me and truth be told, it is the cause of my hopefulness despite the division and and anger here at home. Martin Luther King was once asked if he could live at any time, in any place, when and where would it be. He named his own time and his own place as his choice and offered as his explanation that it was during the darkest moments of the night that the stars above shined their brightest. Until recently, I did not fully understand what his words meant. Now, after having lived in Bush America, I feel what he must have felt back then. These are dark days. War is waged all over this planet-constantly. Here at home, lies are truth, war is peace and dissent is un-American. Still, so many people from all over the world agree that things must change and they are not asking politely for a better, more peaceful world. They are demanding it, making it happen. Strangely enough, for this reason, the future seems bright to me, so I am hopeful in the face of fear.Who I'd like to meet:
Anyone who is intelligent and interesting both. A wish list might read like this: Jimmy Carter, Noam Chomsky, Howard Zinn, Bill Maher, Michael Moore, Molly Ivins, George W. Bush, Al Gore, Robert Raushenberg, Michael Stipe, Edward Norton, George Clooney, Nelson Mandela, Hugo Chavez, Jim Natcheway, Cornell West, Jack Black, Dave Chapelle, Scarlet Johansen, Barack Obama, Larry David, Johnny Depp, Naomi Klein, Studs Terkel, Amy Goodman, Seymour Hersch...Details
