I'm the kind that watches the bus go past because I want to finish my cigarette (even though I know lighting it in the first place will make the bus come quicker). Not quite sure exactly what that makes me - but it pretty much sums up my approach to life.
I like the look of rainwashed asphalt under streetlights; my brother's hair ; my mother's eyes (we've never known why her eyes do this) and my best friend's laugh when it teeters on a cackle. I like curling off the stickers on new books with my nail while I'm reading them; walking along the beach after a storm. I like the moment when mayonnaise begins to thicken and sunsets that make your heart seize. I like tinfoil hats and the sound of rain - anywhere, on anything . I like the way that snow glows at night . I like wine and cheese with friends whilst playing inordinately stupid games like 'Lord of the Rings Trivial Pursuits'. I like conducting lengthy conversations with myself in the mirror (with invented characters or else saying all the things I couldn't think of at the time). I enjoy listening to my brother do the same thing at six o'clock in the morning. I like typhoons in South Korea and those little dog biscuits they give you with coffee. I am fascinated by meringue animals, but abhor the taste of them. I like sleeping at my mother's house and listening to her bustle about the house. I like watching smoke curl into the air. I like the smile kids give you, the one that makes you feel as if you've won something. I like hope in the form of instant scratchies ...
I don't like strangely smug middle aged women; people who take advantage of honesty. I don't like the sound of birdsong after a sleepless night; the smell of the land baking in summer. I don't like the way family gatherings always seem to turn out, despite the best will in the world or the awkwardness that comes with step-parents. I don't like dirty feet (takes all the fun out of walking around barefoot). I don't like those smoking ads. I don't like people who force you to ask them to repeat themselves. I don't like violent cringe moments whilst driving. I don't like running out of Diet Coke when there's still some food left or people asking me "So ... what are your plans?"
