Video for Here's Hoping (by Kevin Handy):
3epkano perform original contemporary live scores to classics of silent cinema.
We are conditioned to associate a particular form of music with silent film; music that is produced or composed to match or pre-empt action on screen, more times than not it suffocates what is happening visually.
Film, in the way it's constructed, the way it's edited, the movement on screen, has a rhythm almost musical in itself.
3epkano's music tries to liberate the image and tap into the atmosphere, the tone that is being generated by the visuals and narrative on screen. Creating music for 3epkano is a process of patient exploration and tentative discovery, the result is a compelling and unique cinematic experience. Album "At Land" and eponymous debut EP available on
Since their inception in 2004, 3epkano have made a name for themselves in Ireland with live silent movie shows in the Sugar Club, National Gallery of Ireland, Meeting House Square, Kilkenny Arts Festival (Parade Tower, Watergate Theatre), Savoy cinema and in the Triskel and Mermaid Arts Centres amongst others. Overseas performances include the village square in Penne d'Agenais (France) and the Brooklyn Academy of Music and Lincoln Center in New York City.
Their recent shows not involving classic silent film include several recent multimedia collaborations with Donal Dineen and his extraordinary film footage (Digital Hub, Spiegeltent, National Gallery) and regular music gigs in Vicar Street, St Canice's Cathedral, Electric Picnic and Whelans amongst others.
3epkano have featured on RTE Radio One on Rattlebag, Around Midnight, Eleventh Hour, On The Fringe and the Arts Show. They have also appeared on RTE television on The View.
