With an unbridled love for their music, Corvallis-based Three Fingered Jack taps into the deep roots of the Celtic world. They are known for driving dance sets punctuated by proud and clear traditional ballads, tightly harmonized waltzes, and the occasional drinking song.------------------------------------------------------
The band takes their name from the Cascades peak of the same name, paying homage to the power of this land and the roots the band members set down here in Western Oregon. Three Fingered Jack formed initially as a trio back in the summer of 2007, with Shari Ame on fiddle and lead vocal, Beth Brown on cello, and long-time pillar of the local folk-music scene, Bruce Marbin, on guitar and bouzouki. That winter they picked up Laureen Urey on the bodhran, and as a foursome have found a deep groove in which to let the tunes fly!-----------------------------------------------
While Oregon is pretty far from the shores of the Celtic homeland, this land is full of the great-great grandchildren of her peoples. As those exiles settled here and the centuries trickled by, the tunes and songs picked up a little in-breath here from the wind of a golden high plateau, a little out-breath there from a forested coastal bluff. Phrases were changed by the whims of memory and preference, rendering the old melodies new, and alive in the language of today.--------------------------
Three Fingered Jack is inspired masters of traditional Irish instrumental music, like Kevin Burke, Martin Hayes, and the band Solas. Like Ton Nua down in Eugene, and Circled By Hounds up in Portland, they are part of a new surge of Celtic music in the Northwest.--------------------------
As lead singer, Shari brings to the mix many old English and Scottish ballads as well, following humbly in the footsteps of Folk Music Revival singers like Maddy Prior, June Tabor, and Martin Carthy. There is a compelling draw to the old stories, for it is the history of us all that has been preserved in their constant re-telling. They are songs of people and of a time when life was local, things changed more slowly and choices were fewer, and there is solace to be found in the more raw, simple, and honest emotions and tales they bring. ------------------------------
In this place where we live, rich with rain, moss, ferny forests and wild, windy coastline, Three Fingered Jack plays in the dialect of the Oregon rain. Theirs is a music of the love of home, the love of family, community and our people, the love of our own particular hillsides and watersheds. Once you feel a thing like that, it’s in your marrow, and it sustains you as you walk through your days.-----------------------------
If you take an Irish pub session, set it down in an Oregon barn, put on your dancing shoes, and let the rain fall hard on the roof, Three Fingered Jack will be there. They play regularly at contra dances in the valley, Corvallis and Albany farmers markets, local restaurants, pubs, and wine bars, as well as in Yachats, Newport, and Coos Bay.
Glad to see you on this great networking tool, I feel I was brought here kicking and screaming, but am really starting to understand and enjoy the benefits.
Come out Saturday to Sahalie Wine Cellar, its their last night and me and my band are closing the place down.
