The three gentlemen musicians that make up 3 of a Kind are exactly that, three of a kind. Not what you would normally expect to see when heading to see a blues band, these kids, all of whom are in their early twenties, play with a fire that is straight out of the rowdiest Chicago club and as much passion for the music as the oldest, muddiest bluesman. Up front is Jeff Gump. He floats like a barfly and stings like John Lee (Hooker, that is). He is the band's voice and guitarist. The group's very own freight train, Eric Huefner, is responsible for all things drum and is the band's backbone. Bassist John English rounds out the ensemble with some rock-solid bottom end.
This trio got its start one evening in the summer of 2008 when Jeff, sitting back and enjoying a beer, sat up suddenly and proclaimed, “I should be in a blues band!” And thus 3 of a Kind was spawned. Jeff went straight to Eric with the idea as they had played together in a hard rock band in their high school days in Lancaster, New York. It didn’t take them long to find John who played in a fellow alt-rock band in Lancaster. Young though they were, the three of them were no strangers to the good stuff. Jeff had been taught his trade by Buffalo Music Hall-of-Famer Willie Haddath of Willie and the Reinhardts and all three of them had been raised on classic rock and blues. So it didn’t take long for them to start rolling out tunes by Buddy Guy, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Eric Clapton and the like, as well as writing their own songs that could stand up in a set with songs by such greats.
And so, for the past year and a half 3 of a Kind has been playing all over Western New York, cutting their musical teeth and doing their part to bring the people true blues music in a world that is full of “simpering, saccharine, soulless slush” (to quote Dan Aykroyd). All the while staying true to their creed: playing blues you can shake your blues to!
Hope to see you all out on the town soon!
