THE THIRD NEW JERSEY VOLUNTEERS
SIXTH CORPS ARMY OF THE POTOMAC
The Third New Jersey Volunteers is comprised of members dedicated to the common goal of preserving the heritage of the men who fought and died to save the Union during the most crucial point in our country’s history the-Civil War-from 1861 - 1865. This non-profit organization participates in ceremonies, memorial observances, parades, encampments, living history displays, Civil War battle reenactments and other civic functions. We pledge to educate our members, and the general public, on the history and the way of life of the Civil War era, showing at all times the proper respect for our flag and undivided allegiance to our nation.
Family, safety and authenticity are our priorities in this organization. Meetings are held once a month at which future events are discussed and voted upon by the members. In the field, Officers and NCOs are promoted through a structured system involving extensive testing that will ensure that those in charge during battles are experienced and competent enough to lead troops in a safe and authentic manner.
A BRIEF HISTORY
Following President Lincoln’s call for 75,000 troops, the Third New Jersey was organized on May 4, 1861. The regiment was fully outfitted and organized on the 18th of May, and on June 4th was duly mustered into service to the United States, for a period of three years, at Camp Olden in Trenton. By June 28th, the regiment totaled over 1,000 men. The Third New Jersey constituted one of the original four regiments comprising what was generally known as the “First Jersey Brigade”, initially attached to General Runyon’s division of reserves at the battle of first Bull Run on July 21, 1861. Shortly after, they were assigned to the First Brigade, First Division of the Sixth Corps, Army of the Potomac.
THE HOBBY OF REENACTING
For the most part, all of the uniforms, weapons and equipment are authentic reproductions of the original designs used during the Civil War. Many members in this unit have ancestors that fought in the war, and in fact, own actual artifacts from that period. Several of us have participated in the filming of major motion pictures, such as, “Gettysburg”, “Glory”, and most recently, “Gods and Generals”. In addition, some of our members are also actively involved in various History Channel specials.
There is something for everyone who is interested in this hobby. Our membership consists of professionals in virtually every field; from teachers, lawyers, law enforcement and medical fields, to the music recording industry!
HOW TO GET STARTED
Every member of the Third New Jersey is a recruiter-so feel free to approach any one of us in the unit. We will be more than happy to answer any questions that you may have regarding this rewarding hobby. The friendships forged here will last a lifetime!
We are also proud to announce that our unit has donated a record-breaking $5,000 to the Civil War Preservation Trust-a distinguished organization dedicated to the preservation of Civil War battlefields and monuments.

When God created the robin redbreast, He told the bird he must remain plain and gray until he earned his red badge of courage. At Golgotha, the robin, seeking to relieve the sufferings of the Savior, overcame his fear of the mocking crowd, flew to Christ and pulled a thorn out of his head. The blood from the thorn's wound dripped on to the robin's breast and has caused it to be red ever since. HAPPY EASTER
Thanks for the add! I just love your music....you guys should come down South and perform at some of our re-enactments. You'd give the 52nd TN Reg String Band a run for their Greenbacks!!
"It is because I love him that I wish to be foremost where our noblest will be found---under the Palmetto flag. Nothing should make him for one moment forget his holiest right. The right to defend the soil & honor of Carolina." -Lucy Holcombe Pickens

"But amidst all, my greatest wish is that so much heroism, and suffering, and blood, may not at least be uselessly expended; and this, and every other record of them may freely be given to the flames, if from the ashes 'shall arise a bird which shall avenge them all.'" -Lucy Holcombe Pickens
