Mel Amina, former member of the Makaha Sons of Ni'ihau, formed the group 3 Scoops of Aloha back in 1982 along with Skippy Kamakawiwo'ole and Abe Keala. Several hits from the early recordings were Sweet Lady of Waiahole and Mom Its Your Song. Mel originally started his career as a bassist but after Skippy passed, he decided to lead as a guitarist. After years of performances in the Hawaiian Islands and throughout the world, the group has graced the stage with many talented musicians but today the heart and soul of the group along with Mel is Analu Aina and Jason Swangel.
Analu Aina, a bassist who joined the group in 1993, has graced the stage with many musicians throughout his musical career and has many recording credits across the islands. He currently performs with Uncle Eddie Kamae twice a week and one of his most memorable recent performance was at the nation's capitol for President Obama's Inauguration Ball.
Jason Swangel, a keyboardist who joined the group in 1991, has many stage performances with groups and artists like Ho'onu'a, Hawaiian Time, and many others. He also has recording credits with IZ Kamakawiwo'ole, Hawaiian Time, Ho'onu'a, Sani Apuakehau, Solana, Milo Shade, The Next Generation, and others.
Klyde Kaimana, a recent addition to the sound of 3 Scoops, has been playing for a number of years at the Polynesian Cultural Center in Laie, where he learned how to play the Tahitian Drums and Instruments of Polynesia. Klyde also played with Kapena, and a lot of other well known artists. Klyde is very talented and plays guitar, ukulele, bass, drums, and other instruments, as well as sings.
In 1995, Mel re-united with his cousin Israel Kamakawiwoole and helped IZ launch his solo career along with Analu Aina. Their success with IZ led to two Gold Records from the Recording Industry Association of America. The Gold Record was from the album “Facing Future” in March 2006 in which they also received their first Platinum Record, the first and only album to go platinum here in the Hawaiian Islands. The other Gold Record was from the album "Iz World".
3 Scoops of Aloha also joined Moe Keale, IZ's Uncle, to spread the spirit of aloha in Waikiki for at least four years at the Sheraton Waikiki before his passing.
Mel Amina and 3 Scoops of Aloha has a new recording titled MEL AMINA released here in the islands. It is available on CDBaby.com, Mele.com, and hopefully soon on e808.com, Itunes, Rhapsody, Napster, and others.
