“3X A LADY, and WE ARE SUCH A FUCKIN’ LADY!!!”

Female collaborations are uncommon and, thus, necessary in hip hop. This makes 3XLADYCREW (3XL), this all women’s hip hop crew consisting of SITY (Should I Tell You), FR@NCHISE and D.J. NIKK, an innovative rarity in the world of popular culture.

These three mistresses of ceremonies are changing the game in unprecedented ways. Battling sexism & the patriarchy, SITY, FR@NCHISE and D.J. NIKKI are some of the first women rappers to explicitly use the F-word: FEMINIST. As a rap collective, 3XL can hardly be considered apolitical; as a crew, the ladies of 3XL address issues of classism, sexuality, queerness, sexism and racism.

As individual rappers and poets, the three college students met at an all women’s liberal art school and began in the fall of 2007 to build their collective. While the ladies of 3XL collaborate on various projects and perform together, 3XL is not a group. Rather, it is a FEMINIST HIP-HOP COLLECTIVE OF SOLO ARTISTS. 3XL was formed as a support network through which SITY, FR@NCHISE and D.J. NIKKI would be able to pool in resources for each other and their affiliates.

In an interview for Bryn Mawr College’s alumni magazine Bryn Mawr Now, SITY—who played a key role in founding 3XL—told the interviewer, “I came up with the idea of being sort of like Wu-Tang… [It has] a collective unit, but its rappers have their own highly individual identities.”

Currently,
FR@NCHISE is working on releasing her solo mixtape.

D.J. NIKKI is working on self-publishing a chap book and who's poems "Sobrevivir" and "The American Dream" will be featured this spring 2008, in the 73rd issue of Sinister Wisdom Magazine: "Latina Lesbians"

SITY is working on releasing her solo mixtape as well as selling her recently self-published book of poetry, Just-Is: A Story.

The mixtapes and chapbooks are expected to be released and distributed later this spring.
