About me: Warm Greetings and thanks for taking the time to check out Zulu London. Please read on... it'll only take a minute.
We are a grassroots activist group of artists based in London; fighting for the freedom of our friend and comrade Kenny 'Zulu' Whitmore - wrongly incarcerated in Louisiana State Penitentiary since December 1973! Zulu was arrested for petty theft - the charges were later dropped. However, already in the belly of the beast - all the authorities needed to do was plant evidence. He was fitted up for the murder of The Mayor of Zachary, a small town close to Angola. Zulu has never had legal representation and has been in solitary confinement since the age of 19; partly due to his affiliation with the Angola Chapter of The Black Panther Party – founded by fellow inmates Herman Wallace, Albert Woodfox and Robert King; collectively known as the Angola Three. In a recent interview with Robert King, the only free member of the Angola Three he had this to say… “Zulu was targeted - he's a victim. Morally he should be out; legally he's a slave- the legal system has made him a slave, lock stock and barrel. I think his release could happen with this campaign that is growing. And other campaigns. I think more people are speaking out. The focus is definitely there by the supporters. He's optimistic and I am too that he could be released.”
As a group of artists and activists, we heard about the story of the Angola Three. We made contact with them. They were amazed and delighted that their struggle for freedom was being taken up around the globe. They taught us about what it means to be a political activist fighting for equality in the Deep South.
They also told us about their brother in Angola - Zulu. We were appalled and from that moment determined to do what we could to bring his story to the people.
We wrote to Zulu. He wrote back to each and every one of us, and now we have a constant stream of letters and communication going back and forth. Always good-humoured and warm, Zulu is a man who provides us with great inspiration; he is instructive and unshakably, deeply resolute. Zulu put us in contact with a wonderful group of Dutch activists also working on his behalf - and so our friendships and family continue to grow.
Instigated by our friends in the Netherlands, we took up a campaign earlier this year to have Zulu removed from the punitive 'Camp J' that lies within the darkest parts of Angola prison. Camp J is an unspeakably harsh daily torture unit, designed to crush a man's spirit. Against all odds, and with Zulu's indomitable spirit intact, the authorities moved him back into solitary confinement. So that's where Zulu is today - right now - in a 9'x6' cell.
Why are we contacting you? Zulu needs our help and support; we need to inform the world of this outrageous miscarriage of justice. "How can I help" we here you cry. Join this movement and inform as many people as you can about the plight of Zulu. Check out his story at www.freezulu.co.uk - buy a tee shirt and send us a photo of you wearing it.
All Power to the People!!! Love and Respect........... Zulu London.
Please sign the petition and pass around. The more signatures we can get from all around the world the better. Scotland gets away with this kind of thing because it does not get the international outcry it should get!
