About me:

SKIP LOWE was born an only child to Herman and Dot Lowe in Glace Bay, NS, JUne 30, 1958. His career in radio started in the early 70's at an FM station in Flint, MI (WFNT). Skip was a Roadie for a brief period for Grand Funk Railroad in 1973 and later did stints for a series of radio stations in Van Nuys, CA, Gary, IN, Gainsville, FL, Spuzzum, BC, Walla Walla, WA, Eau Claire, WI, Dryden, ON, Portland, ME, Jackson, MS and Tucson, AZ. Details of Skip's early radio work are sketchy at best.... This we do know. In 1981 he Joined the Morning Zoo Crew (along with co-host Loretta Sweet - Sweet 'N' Lowe in the mornings!) at 98.9 WDOG in Chicago and gained notoriety with his trademark morning 'prank' phone calls. In 1984 Was fired for repeatedly using the word 'anus' on the air. Skip resurfaced in radio 2 years later after an ill fated attempt at making it in Television (He hosted the game show 'Pac-Men' for 8 weeks and the much maligned 'Tele-Phony - where contestants had to make prank phone calls to their loved ones/bosses etc - which only lasted 4 episodes due to complaints to the FCC). He found a new home on the FM dial in Halifax, NS first at Z104 (The Rock Of The Lobster!) and then 2 years later in 1988 at C101, where he become known for his Rich Little style 'imitations'. The nineties were not so kind to Skip. He started them off unemployed, single (his wife, Stacey Lowe, left him at the C101 Christmas party in 1989 after finding him in the voiceover booth with then traffic intern Janice Powers) and heading to rehab. After a two month stay at Her Lady Of Immaculate Sobriety, Skip was pennyless and alone. He found work at a small recording studio in Halifax, where he worked nights sweeping the floors and grabbing any kind voice-over/jingle work he could (remember the Casino Taxi jingle? Check out the Baritone). It was there at Smelt Sounds that he met the boys in Sloan. They were working on demos one night in 1994 and needed the sound of a man crying for the background of a fresh track (the Murphy penned song 'Bitter Man' would never see the light of day). Skip, recently diagnosed with Hepatitis C, was more than happy to oblige. Skip (no pun intended) ahead 15 years and the boys would run into Mr. Lowe at a music industry dinner in Toronto. He was their server for the evening. One thing led to another and the next thing you know Skip was back on the air at MRCH (108.8 - The Rock Of The Merch!), even if only at a mighty 20 watts of power! A true inspiration and institution, Skip Lowe, like his Idol, friend and sponsor Casey Kasem wants you to always "... Keep your feet on the ground and keep reaching for the stars!", even if your feet are standing in your own vomit and the only stars you see are the ones after getting bonked on the head while trying to steal someones drink.
