The Northern Lights Saloon was originally the homestead cabin of Willaim and Jessie Adair. They were the first owners and proprietors of the Polebridge Mercantile.
Bill Adair had built and operated a store and hotel in what is now Glacier National Park in 1907. After the establishment of the national park in 1910 and the construction of a bridge across the North Fork of the Flathead soon after, travel patterns changed. So, the Adairs moved to the current Polebridge location in 1912.
They built their cabin in what was later to be known as the Northern Lights Saloon on a 160 acre homestead and began construction of the store, next door. The store was completed in 1914. An icehouse and shop were added soon after. Known simply as the Adair's, it was later to become the Polebridge Mercantile. From the beginning, it was the social and business hub of the North Fork and a gateway to the new national park across the river. In 1976, Karen Feather turned the homestead cabin into the Northern Lights Saloon and the social hub moved across the yard. These buildings and an original barn that was burnt in the Red Bench fire in 1988, make up the W.L. Adair General Mercantile Historic Distric. The District was placed on the National Historic Register in 1983 as representitive of an early Montana mercantile enterprise.
Though the Saloon had been modified and "modernized" in recent years, vestiges of Adair's work are still evident in the beauty of the rugged wilderness that surrounds it and the proud character of the independent community.
Operating as a townsite, the residents of Polebridge still exist off grid and provide for themselves in the earnest tradition of America's great homesteading movement.
Music
Polebridge is home to several talented local musicians as well as visiting guests. Reputation has it that the saloon is prone to musical flare-ups once the kitchen closes.
Enjoy music and theater on the Polebridge Stage, located directly behind the Saloon and don't miss the Polebridge Aurorafest, an annual day of music taking place in August.
