About me:
WKMS is an NPR affiliate station on the campus of Murray State University. For 39 years, the station has been filling the airwaves with anything worth hearing and we're not stopping anytime soon. In addition to great news programming from National Public Radio, we broadcast the best music from a variety of genres including: Folk/Bluegrass, Indie and Alt. Rock, World, Jazz, Blues, Americana, Techno and everything in between. And we're there for our listeners in emergencies, like the Icestorm of January 2009.
Check out what's on WKMS at our website,
wkms.org. Be sure to tune in at 91.3, 99.5 in Paris, TN and 105.1 Madisonville.
Let's also clarify some common misconceptions:
1) Yes. Murray State has a radio station. Come visit us on the 8th floor of Fine Arts.
2) No. We don't just play classical music. However, if you enjoy classical programming, tune into WKMS HD-2 on your HD Radio or online. You'll get more Bach than you can shake a stick at.
3) No. Public Radio is not (necessarily) boring. Though there may be programs you don't enjoy, nobody is trying to make you enjoy them or sell you things. We're not trying to make a profit, make radio sexy (well, maybe a little sexy) or sell ads (well, actually we do appreciate businesses who underwrite our programming!). We're funded by listeners and underwriters, Murray State University and the Corporation for Public Broadcasting and we listen to the needs, concerns and desires of our audience. It's like a democracy for your ears.
4) No. Public Radio is not just for old people and liberals. That common misconception is because the majority of NPR listeners are above 35, have a college degree, and are left leaning in their politics. But, it's like P. Diddy always says, "Vote or Die." If young people don't listen and support Public Radio, Public Radio doesn't know how to serve them, and then everybody spends the next 8 years wishing that they'd voted for Public Radio.
When you get a few minutes, take the WKMS programming survey on the website, just click on the menacing looking robots on the main page. Pose your thoughts on the programming review process. We'll take the results into consideration when making future changes to the programming schedule... do it or the robots win... eep!
