We live in a world facing critical challenges that require our collective attention and action. Young people—like all people—yearn to be a part of the solution. Every day in schools and communities across the country—and in fact, the world—young people are daring to make a difference by using what they learn in classrooms to create solutions to tackle important community problems. And, while serving others, they learn for themselves. Learn and Serve Challenge on YOUTube!

Exploring Problem-Solving Processes with Smithsonian and Microsoft

Every day we work through problems.  Some are annoying and familiar like never having matching socks. Others are overwhelming and unfamiliar like how to help victims of the Haiti earthquake.  Helping students understand the process of problem solving will equip them to solve problems that we cannot predict.  But how do we help students reflect on their own problem-solving strengths and weaknesses?  How do we help them see the importance of this 21st-century skill?  How do we help them create innovative solutions to all kinds of problems?

The Smithsonian Institution and Microsoft’s US Partners in Learning’s new partnership is designed to help students and educators deepen their understanding of problem-solving processes. Together we are launching a multi-disciplinary two-part online conference demonstrating how Smithsonian specialists and Microsoft leaders use critical-thinking skills to solve problems in their areas of expertise.  The conference will feature live presentations, moderated forums, and an online exhibit hall that will allow participants everywhere to experience virtually the world of Smithsonian collections and Microsoft’s free education tools.

Join us and tackle some of the world’s most intriguing problems with historians, scientists, educators, and other experts as they share their questions, their methods, and their intriguing findings.

Service-learning offers a unique opportunity for America’s young people to get involved in the community in a tangible way by integrating service projects with classroom learning. Service-learning engages students in the educational process, using lessons from the classroom to solve real-life problems. Students not only learn about democracy and citizenship, they become actively contributing citizens and community members through their service. Service-learning can be applied across all subjects and grade levels; it can involve a single student or a group of students, a classroom, or an entire school. Students build character and become active participants as they work with others in their school and community to create service projects and make a difference.

Blurbs

About me:

Learn and Serve America, a program of the Corporation for National and Community Service, supports and encourages service-learning throughout the United States, and enables over one million students to make meaningful contributions to their community while building their academic and civic skills. By engaging our nation’s young people in service-learning, Learn and Serve America instills an ethic of lifelong community service. Learn and Serve America provides direct and indirect support to K-12 schools, community groups, and higher education institutions to facilitate service-learning projects. Four Guiding Principles: (1) Meet the nation’s needs (2) Improve participants’ lives (3) Strengthen communities (4) Continuously enhance management

Who I'd like to meet:

The mission of Learn and Serve is to engage 5 million college students serving and ensure that 50% of America’s K-12 schools incorporate service-learning into their curricula by 2010.
