Aiming neither to shock its audiences nor simply to imitate others, the Nate Smith Quartet plays subtle, listenable music. “At various periods I’ve tried to absorb the traditions of jazz, and of music, really…and to forget them,” says Smith. “I want to create something true and personal with my tunes and my playing.” True to Nate’s word, this group spins yarns that are alternately reverent and mischievous, posing a refreshing challenge to those who say jazz is dead. -
