About me:
The doors to 42 New Briggate gallery will be mostly closed this Summer but the window will act as the exhibition space through which to observe artists making, experimenting and performing in our Summer residency programme. Proposed activity includes, carving a large head out of polystyrene, painting a laborious replica of a pizza shop artwork, rejection-relieving paper object-making, and weird world animation plus a full blown DIY blockbuster featuring lots of Donald Trump. Details of individual artists projects below.
Showcase Exhibition
Preview Thursday 25th September 6-8pm
26th - 28th September 2008 Gallery open 12-7pm each day.
The residency programme will culminate with a weekend exhibition showcasing work from all the artists involved.
7th July – 13th July
Freya
It is said that god created the world in 7 days. Freya will attempt to create her own world with same amount of time but with the added advantage of chocolate for fuel. At the end of this period the window of 42 New Briggate promises to be populated by strange and improbable creatures and their friends.
14th - 27th July
Rebecca Strain
Rebecca will spend a fortnight concentrating on ‘The Fine Art of Rejection’ by making paper objects from failed applications and rejection letters. Rebecca invites the audience to contribute by submitting their own rejection letters, failed academic or job applications, personal rebuttals, or simply any paper based material concerning rejection via the galleries letterbox.
Alternatively material can be submitted during a special rejection-letter-amnesty event on Friday 18th 6-8pm.
28th July – 3rd August
Grace Harrison
Grace will explore the interpretation and fabrication of history and myths in the city using photography, video and writing. As a starting point she will be using the blue plaque on Leeds Bridge that declares it the site of the shooting of the first moving images by Louis Le Prince in 1888.
4th – 17th August
Rhiannon Silver
Rhiannon’s two-week residency entitled ‘Sarah’ will be spent replicating the decorative wall mural in Al Capone’s Pizza takeaway (opposite 42 New Briggate). Viewers will be able to observe the painstaking but knowingly futile process of reproduction. At the end of the residency the audience will be invited to compare the original mural and the artists imitation.
18th – 31st August
Steven Morant
Steven’s residency will be concerned with the manner in which sky-scraper sculptures such as the Great Sphinx demonstrate architectural sculpture’s timeless appeal. How did carvers on one side of the Great Sphinx’s nose make their work exactly reflect the work on the other? During the residency, it is hoped to test theories about such questions through the six-fold enlargement of a life-size head. Afterwards, when cast, the enlarged head will allow children to shelter inside it.
1st – 14th September
Roman Alaska Worlds Enterprises
Co-founders Laurence Collyer and Richard Lewis will use the two weeks in 42 to develop and present their ‘DIY Blockbuster Group Show’ including an exhibition by artists and musicians of portraits of Donald Trump and the Planets; a bric-a-brac shop made by Roman Alaska World Enterprises displaying homemade submissions of all kinds, and performances in 42 on Sat 6th September + a satellite event at The Brudenell Social Club on the 7th. Laurence and Richards’ orchestrated collision of the DIY and entrepreneurial spheres promises plenty of creative debate.
