| General | Welsh history -- there is only Wales | | Music | Not really a music person -- check out contemporary Welsh music at www.bbc.co.uk/wales/music/ | | Movies | House of Sand and Fog, The Proposition, The Children of Men, Little Children | | Television | Big Love, Mad Men, Rome, Torchwood, Deadwood, Lost, Doctor Who, Project Runway, Rescue Me, Nip/Tuck, Entourage, Sopranos, House, Six Feet Under (didn't you cry at the end?), Dexter, The Wire, John from Cincinnati (Was I the only viewer?), The Riches, The Shield, Dirt -- OMG, I have no life. | | Books | The War for the End of the World, Earthly Powers, anything by Chris Moore -- been enjoying "The Gospel According to Biff, Christ's Childhood Plan", John Burdett's Bangkok books (Bangkok Haunts, Bangkok Tattoo, and Bangkok 8), "Kirinyaga: A Fable of Utopia" Mike Resnick (something to really make you think about Utopias), Anything by Richard K Morgan -- especially "Market Forces" and Takeshi Kovacs novels, "World War Z" (great fun), "Already Dead" and "No Dominion" by Charlie Huston (Buffy for grownups),"Anno Dracula" and "The Bloody Red Baron" by Kim Newman (these books make all other vampire fiction obsolete -- every literally trope and borrowing and Victoria/Edwardian literally pop culture is there), "Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell" by Susanna Clarke (a wonderful pastiche of the Victorian novel with plenty of magic -- the best book I've read in years). I've just finished "Soon I Will Be Invisible" -- a very thoughtful look at what the inner life of a Supervillian must be. | | Heroes | None really. Maybe my Grandparents -- after all they survived the 20th Century and held their family together. This was quite an achievement in the poverty of Wales in the 1920s and 30s. I also admire R.S. Thomas for turning his back on everything and going into the West. I wish more than anything I could write one line to match the least of his. |
