My story with music parallels the enthrolling story of my life. It all started on a cold, damp morning in 1982. I was a vivacious 5-year-old who loved soup and tying his own shoes. The most important decision I had to make on any given day was whether to eat cheereos or rice krispies for breakfast, lunch, and or dinner. Little did I know that on this specific day in late October I would make a decision that would change the lives of myself and millions of others for years to come! It was 6 in the morning. My mother was getting ready to take me to the YMCA for swimming lessons (which, consequently, at the time, was a very very frightening experience; fear of water going up my nose). That morning I decided to watch Seseame Street instead of the Baseball Bunch staring Johny Bench. I saw kids my age playing instuments. And so began the transformation of my life. I studied classical music on the violin which then lead to jazz on electric bass, to the upright bass. I listened to bel biv Davo and jazz in junior high. Then moved to classic rock and jazz in high school. Stevie Wonder and Motown in college as well as funk and jazz. Herbie hancock, Miles, Coltrane, Steely dan, Prince, MJ are just a few of my favorites. All of which helped me to learn enough to be a rock star in the Ryan Montbleau Band.
