Ever since the first race was run at Ruidoso Downs Race Track in 1947, fast horses were the name of our game. That is, until a new era of racing began with the legalization of slot machine based casino game at race tracks. In 2009, Ruidoso Downs Race Track offers 63 action packed days of some of the best horse racing in New Mexico, including 37 stakes races, and culminating in the running of the 51st Annual $2 million All American Futurity on Labor Day. The horses step on the track on Friday, May 22nd, and the action continues Thursdays through Sundays, through Labor Day, Monday, September 7th, 2009. Our standard post time is 1:00 p.m. daily, with the exceptions of some trial race dates and special holidays or stakes races. Other highlights of the 2009 Racing Season include the 9th annual Zia Weekend, July 25 and 26, when racing enthusiasts may watch and wager on the best New Mexico bred thoroughbred and quarter horses as they compete for over $1 million in purses. Billy’s Sports Bar and Grill, located inside Billy the Kid Casino, is open daily at 11:00 am and offers a variety of dining choices including daily food and drink specials. In addition, special dining events such as themed dinners are held periodically throughout the year. Ruidoso Downs Race Track and Casino offers an impressive selection of catering options for groups of any size. Horse Racing Fans may watch and wager on their favorite tracks from around the country inside Billy’s Race Book. The Race Book is open daily at 10 am., and a simulcast schedule is available online at www.RaceRuidoso.com. During its peak season, Ruidoso Downs Race Track and Casino employees more than 400 people to run its various operations. More than 250,000 visitors travel to Ruidoso Downs each summer to enjoy the races.
