The women of the Fierce Five are doing something unconventional. Each eligible city holds competitive slams to determine which woman will be sent to the Women of the World Poetry Slam (WOWps) in Detroit, Michigan, as the city's representative. Although Tara Hardy won the official slot this year for Seattle, each of us competed at one point, whether in the semi-finals or the finals. We are all regulars at the Seattle Poetry Slam. The official rep gets sent all expenses paid. The Fierce Five got together as a group, decided to support each other individually and collectively as writers and performance poets to go to Detroit as individual representatives. .... We are earning our way to Detroit in large part through donations and extra work. We created a website (listed over there to the left), are having fundraisers, selling chapbooks and other merchandise, publishing a chapbook featuring all five of us, burning up any microphone we can (especially as a group), and we will be presenting a big event in February. .... We have a donation page, and even a place where you can adopt, yes, you heard it, ..ADOPT.., your very own poet (the proceeds go to help that individual poet make the trip possible). Money from the general donation page on the website, plus proceeds from any shows will be evenly distributed between the five of us. All donations will make our trip possible as they help us directly pay for and offset the costs of airfare, accommodations, and possibly even a snack while we are there to feed our starving artistic minds. Who can get up on stage with low blood sugar? ....

Our influences have been many. The Fierce Five was born out of a desire to take our poetry, our words, our blood, our guts, out of Seattle and jump up onto a new stage, network, workshop, and just share words. .... Not only will we be breaking down the doors (not literally, we're nice), but we are hoping to show others, and ourselves, it is possible for words to be heard, that poets can go in rogue style, as individuals, represent and give voice to the words on the page, and those stories, joy, and pain from which some of them are born. .... We hope to pave the way for others as we walk, or rather fly, toward WOWps on the road paved for us. ..
