MD Records, an independent label headquartered
in Bristol TN was
founded in 1998 by Dave & Mia Richards as a means to
promote the band they were in at the time (Serenade). Regionally the duo
had been working with other groups in the areas of booking, management,
and live production, so it only made sense to extend the scope of what they
were doing and use MD to help organize
and promote the artists they had been working with.
Mia & Dave formed Gretchen in 2000 and accepted a record deal from
the now defunct Rugged Records. During this time MD's
activities were brought to a halt, after all they finally had a "real"
deal. It wasn't too long before the honeymoon was over and the band realized
that "the grass isn't always greener". Unfortunately Dave &
Mia would then find themselves held captive by circumstance when Rugged
announced their closing one year later and only one month after their national
debut had appeared in stores. It appeared for a while that the band's career
would end, and that Gretchen would remain a regional & underground anomaly.
With hind sight always being 20/20 Dave & Mia decided to resurrect
MD and proceed with a new Gretchen album
(In The Mean Time) which saw its release in Sept of 2004. Now the hope is
to give other independent artists a forum to creatively express themselves
& positivism through music. Armed with a belief that art (and obviously
music) should build up instead of tearing down the people that engage it,
MD plans to align itself with like minded
artists for this purpose.
