Emily's Interests
General
I love traditional Irish music (playing & listening), also world travel, languages, current events, politics, dogs, hiking, good wine, theology, listening to the radio.... I'm Unitarian, & that has cultivated in me an extremely strong passion for the humanities & social justice, especially on an international level. Really, there's not much I'm NOT interested in, except, no..., I'm pretty much interested in that too. For better or worse, I"m a very cerebral person who is constantly seeking out new & exciting experiences wherever I can find them.
Music
Mostly lots of trad Irish... lots of acoustic singer/songwriter stuff like Jackson Browne, Shawn Colvin, Eliot Bronson, Joni Mitchell, Billy Jonas, Nellie McKay, Susan Werner, the Beatles of course, my dad John Seay... other eclectic stuff like Panjabi MC, Audiofix, Deee-Lite, Radiohead, Pearl Django, Nickel Creek, techno, bossa nova, underground hip hop, zydeco, old time, even gospel... I do love opera & can generally name composers of classical pieces on the radio. I love it all, except maybe thrash metal or mass produced 'pop,' ugh -- nothing less sexy than dumb &/or violent. Complete weak spot for acoustic guitar, fiddle or Uilleann pipes. :)
Movies
The Motorcycle Diaries. Sliding Doors. The Kite Runner. Cold Mountain. Aliens. BBC's Pride & Prejudice. Baraka. Whale Rider. Elizabeth. Shaun of the Dead. Y Tu Mama Tambien. O Brother Where Art Thou. Kill Bill, vol 1 & 2. Kung Fu Hustle. Contact. Shakespeare in Love. Dances With Wolves. Best in Show. The Constant Gardener. V For Vendetta. Aeon Flux. Children of Men. Netflix has changed my life.
Television
I always prefer radio to television, especially NPR (internet or local stations), ClareFM & Air America Radio (which I happily just found out I can hear for free on iTunes - I'm an Apple girl, since 1984). In the past, some TV shows I've loved include Buffy, Twin Peaks, NYPD Blue, Absolutely Fabulous, Ali G, Alias & West Wing. The Daily Show & Colbert Report continue to make life worth living. Also love BBC America, Ace of Cakes & (omg my first season ever) American Idol. Go David Cook!
Books
Currently reading Essentials of Obstetrics & Gynecology, Managing Contraceptive Pill Patients & Essential Spanish for Healthcare. Perennial favorites include Madam Secretary. This Is Your Brain on Music. The Cider House Rules. Last Night's Fun. Miracle of Mindfulness. Cyrano de Bergerac. Beginning Spanish books. The Little Prince. Tao Te Ching. Poisonwood Bible. Flow (Optimal Psychology). Cryptonomicon. Anything Lonely Planet. Anything by Billy Collins. I don't know, I read a lot of all genres all the time. I love the Economist, Scientific American & the New Yorker magazines, which is a major downfall of having no 'permanent' mailing address. I wish semi-colons didn't appear after my ampersands. I also love Google & Wikipedia.
Heroes
Stanley Obama & son, Florence Nightingale, Margaret Sanger, Madeline Albright, Jon Stewart, Stephen Colbert, Stephanie Miller, Garrison Keillor, Kevin Crawford, June McCormack, Angelina Jolie, Gary Merrill, Anita Nelson, Cindy Sheehan. Bob Seay III & Helen Seay. John & Martha Seay. Anyone serving our country in uniform.
